One of the biggest Destiny 2 lore accounts on YouTube, My name is Byf, has released a video recounting the entirety of the series’ lore. The video comes just before the release of The Final Shape DLC for Destiny 2, which is supposed to be a conclusion to the major saga of the Destiny universe, and clocks in at about 10 hours.

Destiny and Destiny 2 are known–some may say notorious–for being an excessively lore-heavy franchise, with characters and cataclysms that shape the Destiny universe the player never experiences, along with 10 years of content the player does. While the looter-shooter aspects often take the forefront of gameplay, there is a considerable amount of story tucked away that sheds light and context on the raids and missions the player undertakes.

Destiny 2 Might Be One of the Toughest Games to Get Into

Destiny 2 is a free-to-play game at its core, but its lore, gameplay loop, and paid story expansions can confuse newcomers about where to begin.

YouTuber My name is Byf has long been documenting Destiny and Destiny 2 lore in videos, and has now released a 10-hour compendium of all Destiny lore starting from the origins of the millennia-old hidden primary antagonist The Witness, to explaining the beginning of The Final Shape DLC. The video itself is designed to catch up newer players, known as “New Lights” in-game and among players, and as an explainer to long-time players who maybe haven’t scoured the game’s vast lore.

The video also contains special art and music produced by some of Byf’s collaborators and fans, making it a true labor of love for everyone involved. James “Byf” Byford also documented the writing and editing process to create the video on Twitter, and said that exporting the video took roughly six hours, and ended up being a larger file than Destiny 2‘s Final Shape DLC. The video is so long that it premiered on YouTube as a livestream, where thousands of fans logged on to relive the memories of a decade of Destiny.

Sometimes Destiny 2’s Lore is the Loot

While the lore that makes up the Destiny universe may be inscrutable, some find that it’s one of the franchise’s greatest strengths, as its criss-crossing narratives allow for a wealth of ideas and imagination on the part of the fans, adding to a sense of immersion in the world that the player is taking part in. While it can be cumbersome to keep the myriad facts, rumors, and theories straight, there’s always a great sense of discovery and excitement that comes with making a certain connection or stumbling upon a groundbreaking theory that changes one’s perception of the Destiny universe that enhances the game experience overall.

And judging by the roughly 11,000 concurrent viewers that have been watching the video since it dropped on YouTube, lore enhances their Destiny 2 experience as well.
