After years of waiting fans have finally got their wish, a new Astro Bot game is on the way and its trailer was packed to the brim with references.

Thankfully, those prayers have been answered. During the 2024 PlayStation State of Play this May, a brand-new adventure was unveiled for Astro Bot, with self-titled PlayStation exclusive, Astro Bot. The game will come packed with over 80 levels, 15 new abilities, and a diverse range of locations. Players out there will have to wait a few more months to get their hands on the game as the platformer won’t be released until September 6th of this year. So, in the meantime, why not dive into other great games that will satisfy that Astro Bot craving until the new game rolls around in a few months?

From one PlayStation platformer to another, there probably wasn’t any doubt that the other cutesy PlayStation mascot would find themselves on this list, and for good reason. The most recent title in the Little Big Planet game series is a great shout for platformer fans, and Astro Bot fans alike.

Sackboy: A Big Adventure gets a lot right when it comes to its accessible yet challenging platforming. That’s in large part thanks to its simple controls, well-designed levels, and a great array of unique locations to traverse. The game also features a rather robust customization wardrobe, that, much like the Astro Bot games, is littered with plenty of PlayStation characters and callbacks that players can adorn themselves with.

Yet another platforming PlayStation mascot, but this time it’s a classic gaming duo that has graced PlayStation consoles for well over 20 years. A duo that has starred in more than their fair share of great games, with their most recent title being an absolute powerhouse platforming shooter, that, like Astro Bot, showcases the best parts of the PlayStation 5.

The PlayStation brand has a series of long-running franchises for fans to enjoy stretching back to the PS1.

The new game is the first time fans have got to play as another Lombax that isn’t series regular Ratchet, with his alternate dimension counterpart Rivet. Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is packed full of memorable firefights and platforming sections, plus it features yet another (inter)stellar story for fans to get wrapped up in.

There are plenty of great areas to explore, a wide range of series staple, inventive weaponry for players to get their hands on. Add to that, the clever integration of the DualSense controller’s capabilities, and, much like Astro Bot, it’s another great platformer, that also helps showcase the power and potential of the console, and its nifty DualSense controller.

Although Astro Bot will only be coming to PlayStation 5, that doesn’t mean fans on other platforms won’t be able to find similar games that can help them scratch that great platforming itch. Thankfully, the Nintendo Switch is packed full of exceptional platforming games to tide gamers over, with the standout being Super Mario Odyssey.

The Italian plumber has starred in some quality games during his impressive lifetime, but the Switch 3D platformer is an exceptional game that is sure to be a hit with Astro Bot fans. The game is one of the more banal titles in the series. Due to the capturing power of Mario’s new ally, Cappy. He can now take temporary control of other creatures and objects in the game world.

The power allows for some inventive platforming and, thanks to varied locations and enemy types, there’s plenty of time to experiment and fool around. Couple that with over 1000 collectibles to find and gamers can be sure they’ll be busy for a long time. Despite the Mario charm, the real draw for Astro Bot fans here is the refined platforming and uncertainty of what fun new obstacle or power will be awaiting players up ahead.

Unlike the previous entries on this list, Rayman Legends is a 2D side-scrolling platformer, one that easily ranks up there with the best of the best in the genre. The game features responsive controls and a plethora of game types and levels for players to enjoy. The colorful art style is an absolute treat and the excellent music levels showcase some of the most fun platforming levels you can experience. Any Astro Bot fan looking to enjoy a colorful platformer that, much like its hero, is packed with fun and laughter throughout. What better game to tide Astro Bot fans over than revisiting the excellent PlayStation launch title that was Astro’s Playroom? Although the game is a fairly brief experience, it is still full of fun PlayStation references, and fun platforming levels that all take place within the PlayStation 5. If anything, the game is a great introduction to the PlayStation 5, excellently showing what the console and DualSense controller can do, as well as teasing the seemingly limitless potential of the upcoming Astro Bot game.

In addition to that, the game features one of the easiest Platinum trophies that can be earned on the console for any budding trophy hunter out there. It’s also worth noting that the game has since got a free update with hidden special bots tucked away in five different locations, so there’s just that little bit more to explore and discover until fans can get their hands on Sony’s new platformer.
