Cat Quest 3 has a rather bizarre start to a children’s game. It opens with a bunch of rat pirates attacking and destroying a vessel in the high seas. The only thing left alive is a baby cat, that players can choose to male or female.

Unearth hidden Lost & Found treasures and return them to their owners in Cat Quest 3.

A ghost cat named Captain Cappey saves this kitten, raises it for fifteen years, and then the adventure starts. There’s a mystical treasure along with stopping these evil rat pirates once and for all. Again, it’s a hefty intro to Cat Quest 3, but that’s the gist. Let’s get to the real meat of this game though and go through some good early pointers.

6 Try The Game On Normal

You Can Change The Difficulty Whenever

Options menu in Cat Quest 3

There are only two difficulty modes in the game: Easy and Normal. There are no assist options unlike another seafaring indie game, SteamWorld Heist 2. The good news is that players can change the difficulty at any time in the options menu of Cat Quest 3.

Also, since this game is aimed more or less at a younger audience, it’s not too hard on either challenge level. That’s why most players should probably start on Normal. If players plan on playing the game with the local two-player co-op option, then Normal is definitely the version to go with. Also, the rest areas that can launch the co-op feature will give players health for free an unlimited amount so they should go hog wild whenever one pops up.

5 Learning Where To Upgrade Gear

But Don’t Start Early

Upgrading gear in Cat Quest 3

North of where players start is a little town on the coast of Pawt Purvanna. Here, players can go to the weapon shop, run by Kidd Cat, who can strengthen gear for a nominal fee. There is also Mage Bonney who runs a magic shop to boost spells. Finally, there is a pub where players can sometimes learn about typical RPG side quests.

While the shop resources are great, players shouldn’t take advantage of them right away. It would be a waste of currency to upgrade early as this is more or less a loot-based game. From hidden treasure on the world map to treasure found in caves, loot will be frequent thus negating early upgrades.

4 Healing Like A Good White Meowage

Go To The Lovepurr Islands

The Healpaw spell in Cat Quest 3

The checkpoint stations are great in this game besides getting the ability to launch co-op. There is another way to heal in Cat Quest 3 besides these checkpoints or leveling up though. Now, there are a lot of great places to go early on which is the point of an open-world sailing game.

It’s an absolute must that players visit the Lovepurr Islands where Lovepurr Castle is located. Here, they can start a side quest that will probably take a while from an attendant. They will also give players the spell, Healpaw, which will regain the player’s health for a short period. It’s like the Regen spell from Final Fantasy which is a top-tier ability from White Mages.

3 Cycling Between Weapons And Spells

Shoot First, Ask Questions Later

Fighting enemies in a cave in Cat Quest 3

Initially, players can equip one spell and two weapons. They can have a sword along with a ranged weapon like a gun. What spell is equipped doesn’t matter as players can have a mix of offensive and defensive spells or they could go defensive all the way. When players level up, they will reach new tiers in the equipment menu which applies to the cat hero along with the ship.

Players must remember to keep up with equipping new gear when possible. It’s also a good idea to cycle through weapons and spells during combat. First, players should use their spell, then their gun, and end with the sword. Once enough Mana is recharged or the gun is reloaded, players should start the cycle all over again.

2 Guides To Sailing

From Sneak Attacks To Teleportation

Sailing in Cat Quest 3

The nice thing about sailing in the game is that players don’t need their ship. If they hop off, their cat hero will be in a raft and they don’t have to worry about any nearby sharks coming to attack them like in other games. They float slower, but some islands are so close together that a ship would just get in the way. Players shouldn’t be afraid to go shipless also because the ship can be summoned at any dock.

That’s a mechanic, not everyone may know about. Players might not also think to attack enemies on land with their ship but it is possible. It’s a great way to avoid damage from afar especially if players don’t have a good starting pistol.

1 Remembering Where Secrets Are Located

Make Notes With Screenshots

Finding a chest in Cat Quest 3

Like any good open-world game, Cat Quest 3 has secrets. Some of these secrets may be hard to discern at first like a group of glowing rocks that can unlock a treasure if they are hit in the right order. Without the key, figuring this riddle out may be impossible without an in-game note.

If a secret like this stumps the player then they should make a note of it. Take a screenshot of the place in the world and on the map. Then, in a notebook or a phone app, players should mark why they are stumped. It’s a good way not to forget about a secret or to log inaccessible areas without the proper key.
