The first game in this franchise debuted in 2010 as an exclusive to Xbox 360. Remedy took thirteen years to make a sequel and truthfully Alan Wake 2 feels more like a sequel to 2019’s Control than it does 2010’s Alan Wake. What will be the next game for Remedy? Will they move on to Control 2 or Alan Wake 3?

Both Control and Alan Wake 2 leave on cliffhangers that fans want to see answered and Control fans of course have been waiting longer. Maybe Remedy will subvert expectations and head into the remakes for Max Payne next. It’s all up in the air, but no matter what they do, these burning questions aren’t going anywhere for Alan Wake 2 so let’s organize them and figure some things out.

WARNING! Spoilers ahead.

7 Knock Knock

Who Is Mr. Door?

Mr. Door in Alan Wake 2

Mr. Door is referenced in Control but he is never elaborated on. He is given a form in Alan Wake 2 as a talk show host that Alan occasionally talks to during his chapters. There’s even a radical rock opera that Mr. Door participates in.

In the final chapter of Return 9: Come Home, Mr. Door is given a first name, Warlin, and it is implied that he came from Bright Falls long ago. During his final confrontation with Alan, it also seems like Alan caused him to be trapped in The Dark Place. What is Mr. Door’s backstory and is he a villain or a good guy?

6 The Saga Continues

Is Saga’s Family Okay?

Saga in Alan Wake 2

Alan may be alive but after his revelation, it’s unknown what happens to Saga. When she shot that bullet and Alan finished the book, did her chapter get rewritten? Is Saga back in the real world with her daughter and husband or is she stuck in the spiral of The Dark Place too?

It would be odd to center the next game around two protagonists stuck in The Dark Place although this could lead to new gameplay mechanics. Could co-op be added wherein players could pair Alan and Saga together in a multiplayer horror adventure?

5 Spiraling Out Of Control

What’s The Difference Between A Loop And A Spiral?

Alan Wake in Alan Wake 2

In the final moments of the game, Alan realizes that he has been going through a spiral and not a time loop. It’s also confirmed at this moment that Saga’s light bullet didn’t kill Alan. So, at least one cliffhanger was dealt with in the game.

What does this really mean for Alan though? What’s the difference between a time loop and a spiral? Does the spiral indicate a staircase that Alan can conceivably get to the bottom of and will that bottom be found in the next game?

4 Ring Ring

Who Is The One That Called Saga In The Dark Place?

Saga Anderson in Alan Wake 2

When Alan is in the New York City version of The Dark Place, he receives several mysterious calls on the payphone. These calls are from Tom Zane, the poet and film director of the Alex Casey movies who also turns out to be another version of Alan.

It’s a bit hard to grasp. Now, in Saga’s final chapter, she also goes into The Dark Place and receives some calls. Players are not given the identity of who this person is. It sounds like a woman, but her identity is a big mystery.

3 Carrying On The Light

Who Were The Torchbearers?

Saga talking to the Koskelas Brothers in Alan Wake 2

One of the biggest mysteries that is plaguing Saga throughout the game revolves around a cult. What do they want and who is behind it? It turns out that the Koskelas brothers were behind it but that’s not the only revelation.

The cult is good and is actively trying to protect the town from The Taken and other monsters. Illmo reveals that the cult was a way to succeed The Torchbearers that came before one. Two questions come with this. One, who were The Torchbearers, and will there be a prequel about them? Two, is Illmo and the rest of Bright Falls okay now?

2 Good Ahti Hunting

What Kind Of Being Is Ahti?

Saga talking to Ahti in Alan Wake 2

There are snippets of characters from Control who make an appearance in Alan Wake 2. For example, when Alan visits Tom Zane in his apartment, a TV shows the main character of Control, Jesse Faden, along with Ahti. Ahti is also referenced via his book that Mr. Door appeared to have been reading in his dressing room back at the TV studio.

These were all cute Easter eggs in Alan Wake 2, but there is one full character that appeared in both games: Ahti the janitor. Ahti appears in The Dark Place and the real world implying that he must have a way to escape. What kind of being is Ahti and why is he so cryptic with everything he says?

1 Rock On Grandpa

What Happened To The Old Gods Of Asgard?

Tor Anderson in Alan Wake 2

Ahti has the strange ability to seemingly exist in two places at the same time. He helps Alan with his stuff in The Dark Place and Saga’s problems in the real world. Two other characters appear and they can exist in two different realities: Tor and Odin. Those two belonged in the band The Old Gods of Asgard which sounds like it should exist in the MCU. The band is comprised of Saga’s grandpa, Tor, her Great Uncle Odin, and another character that doesn’t appear outside of The Dark Place.

In The Dark Place, the band appears young but they have aged in the real world. Does that imply that The Dark Place exists in the past or perhaps that people exist as their best selves in this alternate reality? Also, where do Tor and Odin go after Alan makes it back to the real world? It’s implied that they dove into the water to pull out Saga but they are never seen again.
