Starry Studio’s Once Human is another entry in the survival genre, putting players into a post-apocalyptic world that will test their survival skills. In this game, players need to build and expand their territory, scavenge for food and water, and battle terrifying monsters. On top of simply gathering loot and crafting, there are also a few things that players will need to keep on top of.

When managing their survivability in Once Human, players may think about maintaining their Hydration Meter or lowering their Sanity after venturing into pollution zones. However, there is an unseen stat that players might not even realize: Weight. This stat actually impacts gameplay quite a bit, and not managing it properly can have some unforeseen consequences. Here is everything there is to know about weight in Once Human.

Weight Explained in Once Human

how to alter the player's weight in Once Human during the character creation process

The first time players will be able to manage their weight is during the character creation process in Once Human. It is largely controlled by the player’s fitness level stat. Though the player’s overall weight may appear to be a simple cosmetic choice on the surface, adjusting the player’s weight actually offers its own buffs and debuffs. Below is a breakdown of how the player’s weight impacts their stats:

Weight Category

Effects

Below 65kg

  • Base Load (carrying capacity): 80kg
  • Melee Attack Speed: +15%
  • Melee Attack Damage: -10%
  • Max Stamina: +25

65kg to 85kg

  • Base Load (carrying capacity): 90kg
  • Torso Damage Reduction: +10%
  • Stamina Recovery Speed: +20%

Above 85kg

  • Base Load (carrying capacity): 100kg
  • Melee Attack Speed: -20%
  • Melee Attack Damage: +15%
  • Rolling Speed: -20%
  • Weapon Stability: +15

Each weight category is tailored to a different play style. For instance, if players want to be fast and agile, they can opt for a weight below 65kg. On the other hand, if players want to max out their melee damage and carrying capacity, then they can go for a weight value of 86kg or above.

Before choosing their weight, however, players are advised to consider the cons of each weight category as well. As of right now, the all-around most balanced weight value falls between 65kg and 85kg, as it offers fairly few drawbacks.

How To Change Weight

While setting up the player’s fitness level during the initial phase of the game determines their starting weight, weight can actually be altered throughout the game via a few different factors. For players looking to gain a few extra pounds on their character, regularly eating foods with the Muscle-Building effect will increase weight. Such foods include french fries and fish and chips. On the other hand, if players want to dip into the lower-weight categories, they can try one of the following methods.

The first is to simply eat any food that causes Gastric Discomfort, such as raw meat, spoiled food, or dirty water. Gastric Discomfort will cause the player to lose weight over time, along with introducing some other temporary debuffs. Once the player reaches their desired weight, they can cure the effect with Antibiotics, which can be crafted via the Supplies Workbench. The second is to consume food, like Fat-Burning Juice, that offers the Weight Watching effect.

Alternatively, players can also change their weight by respeccing their fitness level when changing their appearance at the Floor Mirror. Doing so will cost Chrysalis Tokens, but can save players a lot of time and effort.
