Highlights

  • The Hunting Horn in Monster Hunter Wilds faces uncertainty due to a potential increase in complexity compared to the last version.
  • The Hunting Horn’s melodies offer unique buffs that can change hunt dynamics unlike other weapons, but its complex MH World version was heavily streamlined in MH Rise.
  • Developers aim to balance complexity and accessibility in the upcoming Monster Hunter Wilds to make the Hunting Horn engaging.

Monster Hunter Wilds is making some exciting moves, but one decision could lead to some uncertainty for the Hunting Horn. Considering how many weapon types are going to be in Monster Hunter Wilds, it seems unlikely that one weapon in particular would be singled out above the others. However, one announcement from the developers threw a lot of attention to the Hunting Horn. As a result, it could end up being a top performer in Monster Hunter Wilds, or it could end up struggling. Players will have to wait until Monster Hunter Wilds‘ release to find out.

The Hunting Horn is unique among weapons in Monster Hunter due to its properties. A massive instrument that can be wielded as a bludgeon, the Hunting Horn lands heavy blows, but its true value lies in its melodies. Through inputting different strings of commands, players can set up a melody to be played that will offer certain buffs to the user and nearby allies. The Hunting Horn’s melodies have the ability to change the flow of a hunt in a way that no other weapon can. The Hunting Horn is the clearest example of a support weapon in the series.

Monster Hunter Wilds’ Hunting Horn Poses a Crossroads For Potential Players

Monster Hunter World’s Hunting Horn Was its Most Complicated Weapon

It was revealed that Monster Hunter Wilds will echo how Monster Hunter World‘s Hunting Horn works. In World, the Hunting Horn was easily the most complicated weapon in the game, with each horn having several songs that could potentially be played. Their effects range from attack boosts, to health recovery, to more niche effects like elemental resistance. The sheer list of effects made the Hunting Horn incredibly versatile. However, remembering each horn’s songs and their effects, in addition to preparing them, creates a high bar for entry when it comes to using the weapon. World‘s Hunting Horn has phenomenal potential, but is difficult to learn in return.

Monster Hunter Rise’s Hunting Horn Was Significantly Less Complicated

This stands in stark comparison to the Hunting Horn in Monster Hunter Rise. Once again, it’s a support weapon with many buffs, but with a few differences. First, each Hunting Horn in Rise has three set songs, and they are far easier to activate than Monster Hunter Worlds‘ offerings. On one hand, this greatly eases the burden on the player, but it also limits each horn to only three melodies. In addition to reducing options, it also renders some horns less useful than others. Monster Hunter Rise‘s Hunting Horns were easier to learn, but the trade-off is a lower overall ceiling.

The Hunting Horn’s melodies have the ability to change the flow of a hunt in a way that no other weapon can.

Monster Hunter Wilds’ Hunting Horn Should Take What Worked About World’s Version

Since fans know to expect another complicated Horn, the developers need to deliver, especially with how ambitious Monster Hunter Wilds looks. The sheer versatility of Monster Hunter Worlds‘ Hunting Horn was impressive, but it needs a more reasonable skill curve. If it turns out to be a difficult weapon to handle once again, it could end up easily being the least used weapon in the game. That would be an unfortunate fate for such a useful and unique weapon. While Monster Hunter World‘s Hunting Horn is a great blueprint, not every aspect of the weapon needs to be repeated to the letter.

Monster Hunter Wilds‘ developers will be walking a fine line with the new version of the Hunting Horn. It could be an amazing asset when hunting Monster Hunter Wilds‘ selection of monsters, but only if players can learn to use it properly. When it comes to the Hunting Horn, the developers’ greatest test will be combining the intricacies of Monster Hunter World‘s version with a more intuitive playstyle and less steep learning curve. If they succeed, Monster Hunter Wilds‘ Hunting Horn will be one to watch in the game’s future.
