WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Tower of God Season 2, Episode 7, “Mazino Magic”, now streaming on Crunchyroll.

The seventh episode of Tower of God showed the brief showdown between Jue Viole Grace and the Ranker-killer Urek Mazino, and in the aftermath, both Viole and the Yeon family sustained a major injury. While heavily teased in the final stages of the previous episode, the battle between Viole and Mazino was rather disappointing for various reasons.

With the group getting through the Zygaena test through sheer luck, Ja Wangnan gets some crucial information about a major tournament or gauntlet that will take place at the Workshop; the part of the Tower where all items are made which can be found on the 30th level.

As with most anime adaptations, some moments are left out from their source materials, and here are such moments in Tower of God manhwa.

Jue Viole Grace vs Urek Mazino

A Powerful Enemy Gives The Group Some Grace

Urek Mazino tones down his hostility when he realizes that the group he’s attacking is not made up of Rankers but Regulars taking a test. It turns out that the rarity of the Zygaena flower, which is the symbol of the Yeon family, is a fiction that is engineered by the family through the culling of Zygaena juveniles. In harvesting the flower on the baby Zygaena’s back, it loses its only source of nutrients and dies. Urek’s objective is to catch a Zygaena baby and have it grow so that its deliberately low numbers can increase, thus reducing the rarity of the flower. Urek and Viole’s contest begins when the Zygaena turns over. If Urek manages to catch Viole before he can grab the Zygaena flower directly above them, then he will kill him. Viole sent Kang Horyang and Prince away, but they have no intention of letting Viole fight alone. Prince transmits Viole’s location to the rest of the team. Mazino has similar goals to Rachel, as he wishes to leave the Tower and see the “endless sky” he believes exists beyond it.

“What’s so fun about becoming king of the Tower? You can have it for all I care. I’m going outside the Tower. Outside the Tower is an endless sky. Infinite stars illuminate the darkness. It’s billions of times freer out there. Don’t you think what you want is lacklustre when there’s a place like that out there?”

Jue Viole Grace – Tower of God Season 2 Episode 7

Despite being pressed by multiple attackers at once, Urek is unscathed and darts for Viole who is still falling due to the Zygaena’s changing position. As Urek attacks Viole, Miseng, who had been chasing the baby Zygaena winds up in the path of the clash. In the last second, Viole manages to shield Miseng from Mazino’s attack but sustains a major injury to his back. Seeing the baby Zygaena, Mazino’s interest in Viole wanes, and he offers them the flower inside the adult Zygaena. As he leaves, he is ambushed by three Rankers led by the test director, but makes quick work of them before pinning the test director to the ground. He shows him the Zygaena baby, and reveals his knowledge of the Yeon family’s conspiracy to engineer the rarity of the Zygaena. He returns to his lair, hands the creature to his assistant Yuje, whom he tells to inform Yuri (presumably Jahad) that he managed to get it, as well as keep tabs on Viole.

The Aftermath of the Test

Ja Wangnan Speaks to Ha Jinsung – Tower of God Season 2 Episode 7

After the test, Viole is bedridden for two days, while Yihwa won’t leave her room due to the significant damage to her family’s reputation caused by the revelation about the rarity of the Zygaena’s flower. Ja Wangnan joins Ha Jinsung on the roof, where he is plainly told that he and his friends are putting Viole’s life in danger, and should separate themselves from him. Ha Jinsung’s relationship with Viole is complicated, because on one hand, he’s one of many people associated with FUG who are using Viole to achieve their own ends without regard for his desires, but on the other, he seems to genuinely care for Viole.

The innocence and sincerity which made Bam form his various friendships and become liked among the original cast. After going shopping with Arkraptor, Kang Horyang and Prince, Ja Wangnan tries bringing up breaking away from Viole, but none of them will entertain the idea. While Yihwa is downtrodden by the truth about her family, she is approached by Hwaryun, who tells her that the Yeon family is still putting out bounties for Zygaena babies. She asks Yihwa if witnessing her family’s disgrace has wounded her resolve to climb the Tower. Through her provocation, she manages to get Yihwa to find her own way forward. She will begin her path to self-improvement and climb the Tower in order to correct her family’s mistakes, and to show her resolve, she will take over the cooking, which hilariously drives Miseng to tears.

Ja Wangnan and the Others Resolve to Continue Climbing With Viole

“FUG Didn’t Like That”

Karaka – Tower of God Season 2 Episode 7

Ha Jinsung has developed a fondness for Viole that makes him reluctant to wantonly murder Ja Wangnan and his crew; however, other members of FUG aren’t so nice. At night, Jinsung is visited by a mysterious veiled individual named Karaka, a Slayer for FUG who seems to have a friendly relationship with Jinsung. He and various other members of FUG believe that Viole would be far better off climbing the Tower with capable teammates selected by the organization. Karaka also thinks that Jinsung’s emotions are clouding his judgment on the matter. After his conversation with Jinsung, Karaka disappears into the shadows once more, where he orders someone named Poken to find trustworthy Regulars to keep tabs on Viole and to kill any of his teammates should they do something suspicious.

Before she takes her leave, Ja Wangnan asks Hwaryun how he can meet Viole’s friends. She tells him about a place called the Workshop, which is found on the 30th floor of the Tower and is the site where all the items found in the Tower are crafted. In two years time, an event called the Workshop battle will take place, and if they can get there, they will be able to find Viole’s friends. Episode 7 of Tower of God season 2 was disappointing when it came to the combat between Viole and Urek, who is supposedly one of the strongest in the Tower. This event should have held more significance and served as a good point to redeem the season with a showing of quality animation, but sadly this was not the case. The developing convergence between Viole’s current friends and those from his life as Bam is an interesting narrative point and is shaping up interestingly, but the show could use a masterful exhibition of sakuga in its more significant scenes.
