Key Takeaways

  • The Death Stranding 2 release date has already been decided, but won’t be revealed until 2025.
  • Kojima Productions previously committed to releasing the Death Stranding sequel in 2025.

The Death Stranding 2: On The Beach release date has already been decided, but the catch is that it won’t be revealed for a while yet. That’s according to Hideo Kojima, who recently hinted at some complications leading to the decision to delay the Death Stranding 2 release date announcement.

Kojima Productions’ latest game starring Norman Reedus was officially announced in December 2022. 15 months later, the company committed to releasing Death Stranding 2 sometime in 2025.

Death Stranding 2 Release Date Was Planned To Be Announced at TGS 2024

On September 29, PlayStation held a 90-minute Death Stranding 2 presentation at Tokyo Game Show 2024. Appearing as one of the event’s guests, Kojima revealed that the game’s release date was already decided. “Due to some unforeseen circumstances, we cannot announce it today,” the famous game designer explained (via VGC), suggesting that the initial plan was to reveal the release date during the TGS presentation. Although he did not elaborate on what prompted this turn of events, Kojima did note that he’s currently preparing for the eventual announcement.

Death Stranding 2 Will Only Get a Release Date in 2025

Since Kojima has historically been heavily involved in The Game Awards, some fans were previously speculating that the Death Stranding 2 release date would be announced at the 2024 edition of Geoff Keighley’s show in December. This theory has now been dismissed by Kojima himself, with the industry veteran stating that the much-anticipated announcement will only happen in 2025.

For reference, the original Death Stranding‘s release date was announced in May 2019, roughly six months before the game reached the PlayStation 4. Following Kojima’s latest update, there’s a plausible chance the second series entry could follow a similar pattern. A Q4 2025 release window has always been the most likely time frame for its launch, not least because the holiday season has long been an especially lucrative period of the year for video game sales.

Aside from this release date teaser, the TGS 2024 presentation also saw Kojima reveal that Death Stranding 2 will feature a photo mode that might have an impact on the game’s story. Viewers even got a chance to see a Death Stranding 2 music video, which served to introduce one of the songs from the game’s original soundtrack, Horizon Dreamer, performed by Japanese singer Daichi Miura. Some new gameplay footage was also showcased during the event. While Death Stranding 2 will be a PlayStation 5 exclusive at launch, Sony’s growing focus on multi-platform publishing suggests it won’t be too long before PC players get to experience it, as well. After all, the original game was ported to PC only eight months following its PS4 debut.
