New Overwatch Game Isn’t What Fans Expect

According to Jason Schreier’s new book, Blizzard is working on Overwatch Mobile alongside Overwatch 2 updates. Overwatch 2 continues to get regular updates, but Overwatch Mobile may scratch the itch for fans on the go.

With frequent advancements in technology, smartphones have become powerful little computers with high-fidelity displays. As the quality of mobile technology has improved, so has mobile gaming. Popular mainstream franchises like Call of Duty, Star Wars, and Pokemon have found success on mobile, while Apex Legends Mobile failed to reach a broad audience and was subsequently discontinued. Many of these games are free-to-play with microtransactions that keep players engaged while ensuring developers can continue to support them. With tons of insider knowledge, Jason Schreier has suggested that Overwatch may be released on mobile in the future.

Spotted by Dexerto in Jason Schreier’s book, Play Nice: The Rise, Fall, and Future Of Blizzard Entertainment, Blizzard is working on Overwatch Mobile. This book goes into the inner workings of Blizzard with knowledge accumulated from 350 interviews with current and former employees. According to Schreier, Overwatch General Manager Walter Kong is overseeing the development of Overwatch Mobile. Kong also continues to greenlight changes to Overwatch 2, including new heroes and content. It’s unclear if Overwatch Mobile will be a mobile port of Overwatch or its sequel, or an entirely new experience designed for the platform. As Overwatch Mobile allegedly remains in active development, it could still be a while before it’s released.

Blizzard May Be Working on Overwatch Mobile

Similar to other entries in the series, Overwatch Mobile could see a reveal at a future BlizzCon. Overwatch was unveiled at BlizzCon 2014, and it was released less than two years later, while Overwatch 2 was revealed at BlizzCon 2019, nearly three years before its launch. As Overwatch Mobile has been speculated on for years, it may be further in development than fans expect. This could mean that the game might be shadow-dropped after an announcement. Alternatively, Overwatch and its sequel were beta-tested ahead of release, so fans of the series may be able to try Overwatch Mobile ahead of time.

With Activision having a prominent presence in the mobile landscape with Call of Duty, Diablo, and Hearthstone already represented, the addition of Overwatch may further improve its statistics. Given that it hasn’t been officially confirmed or revealed by Blizzard yet, Overwatch Mobile could change in scope before it’s shown off. As Blizzard continues to update Overwatch 2, a future event could help promote the mobile entry or reward in-game goodies.
