Deck Searching Cards in Pokemon TCG

In the physical Pokemon Trading Card Game, deck-searching cards can be played on your turn to seek out Pokemon or item cards that meet specific criteria. Some deck-searching cards operate on the luck of a coin flip or even contain bonus effects such as removing Stadium cards from play.

Because of the ability to seek out specific Pokemon to then put onto your bench, or other cards that match specific criteria, deck-searching cards have become a very common addition to many decks, especially themed decks that operate with a single Type. Deck-searching cards often take the form of either Trainer, Stadium, Supporter, or Item cards, with notable examples including Great Ball, Net Ball, Ultra Ball, Buddy-Buddy Poffin, Jacq, Irida, and Mesagoza – just to name a few.

Are There Deck Searching Cards in Pokemon TCG Pocket?

In Pokemon Trading Card Game Pocket, the cards that are recognized as deck-searching in the physical variant of the game do exist. However, they have been altered to better suit the simplified play style and match time of PvP card battles. This has been achieved by removing the deck-searching property from these cards, and instead changing them to pull random cards from the player’s deck.

As of the release of Genetic Apex (the first collectible set in the game), the only current deck-searching card is the very familiar Poke Ball item card. As seen in the image below, this card now pulls 1 random Basic Pokemon from the player’s deck, rather than letting the player seek out a specific monster.

However, as the deck size has also been reduced to 20 cards total in Pokemon Trading Card Game Pocket, players can still get some value out of this card with clever utilization and planning of which Basic Pokemon they include in their deck build, as well as the quantity of each selection.
