The reception of Palutena hasn’t changed drastically after Super Smash Bros Ultimate’s launch. She took a few early majors like Mainstage 2019, Suplex City Smash 2019, and Let’s Make a Big Move 2020 by the Palutena main, Nairo.

Since he is a glass canon, his disadvantage greatly holds him back. His slow air speed makes it challenging for him to reach back to the stage. It should be easy for players to catch him consistently, though his side special has a chance to burst forward with great speed and power. This can greatly help Luigi reach the stage, though it can randomly hinder him when flying too far at an awkward, exposing angle. Despite his glaring issues, he’ll only get stronger as players perfect his combo potential.

8 Corrin

Dual Horned Swordsman

Corrin was an exceptional character in Super Smash Bros Wii U before falling as a mid-tier in the next game. Their toned-down stats, especially their speed, made them appear weak in the early meta. Everyone in the roster moved much faster in the new engine, though Corrin still moved as if still in the predecessor’s slower engine.

It would take a while before their potential started to shine in competitive play. This great strength made him popular in early competitive scenes, allowing Tweek to earn Low Tier City 7 in July 2019 before Quidd would win Let’s Make a Big Move 2022.

Despite Pokemon Trainer’s overpowering options, characters develop over time. This development complicated their matchups, which exposed a huge flaw with Pokemon Trainer. Since the character includes three fighters, players have to remember various matchups for each one. This includes learning how to play at a disadvantage, which none of the Pokemon excel at.

It doesn’t help that their change special goes into a set rotation, forcing the player to keep changing for the desired Pokemon. Lucina was very strong and popular in the early years of Super Smash Bros Ultimate. Similar to Jigglypuff, wasting his double jump is a great cost as he can’t rely on his up special to recover. Floaty characters are trickier to control since they have limited defense options, making them more vulnerable to attacks. Despite his lower popularity, the dinosaur is still strong in competitive play.

4 Bayonetta

A Witch In Time

Bayonetta dominated Super Smash Bros Wii U before she would inevitably be toned down for the next game. Her older version had more zero-to-death combos through her specials and attacks, letting her drag the opponent to the closest blastzone. She was a one-hit monster, even after the immediate balance patch. In this game, those combos are still present, though require strict positioning and setups. He’s the more risky version of Pikachu with his self-damage moves, making his attack whiffs and specials more committal. His rewards would greatly overshadow the drawbacks with his high damage output and smaller hurtbox. It was easy for him to give damage while being harder to catch the smaller mouse as Nietono would win Umebura SP 3 in April 2019.

His domination wouldn’t last long during developer support. The balance changes hindered the character through his size and self-damage moves, making his whiffs more punishable through damage while his hurtbox grew bigger. This would greatly diminish the character’s presence in competitive play as the fighter was much more glass than a canon.

2 Ryu

The community viewed Ryu as the weakest fighting game representative compared to Ken, Terry, and Kazuya. It felt like Ken was the better Ryu in the early metagame, which wouldn’t help when Terry and Kazuya joined the roster.

It took a while for the character to unlock his potential, getting stronger over time with update patches. He would gain more options to punish and start combos, including his down smash being special-cancellable. His hadoken also got buffed, allowing him to pressure opponents at distant range. Even in the later meta, Asimo was the only dedicated Ryu main to take the major Sumabato SP 51 in September 2024.

Before the community could confirm his tier placement or study his techniques, he took a major in October 2021. Zachray solely used the character to dominate Kagaribi 5, making Sora the fastest DLC character to earn a major win after release.
