Persona 5 Tactica might be the last spinoff Persona 5 ever gets. It seems like Persona 6 will be revealed as early as the end of this year and if not by then, 2024 for sure. When that sequel comes out is a whole other story. As for this current spinoff, it is a side story not part of the mainline cannon.

Persona 5 Tactica: How Many Missions, Kingdoms, & Quests (& How Long to Beat)

Players that are curious about the length of Persona 5 Tactica, can find details on its Kingdoms, Missions, and Quests in this guide.

Persona 5 Tactica keeps some elements of the main game though like the party’s familiarity with each other along with the summoning of Personas. However, the gameplay is now a turn-based tactical RPG. After completing this one, there are plenty of other grid-based and free-roaming strategy games that fans may adore across a wide birth of consoles.

6 Disgaea 7: Vows Of The Virtueless

Highest Metacritic Score: 84

A cutscene featuring characters in Disgaea 7

Disgaea 7: Vows of the Virtueless is the latest game in the series. Like Final Fantasy, every entry in this series is separate from the rest with completely new stories and characters. The game has a samurai vibe and it follows a young girl who is trying to see the wonders of the underworld as she thinks it is filled with badass warriors. The game, and series overall, is very silly and the gameplay is non-conventional too.

Characters move on a grid in battle and can perform the usual offensive moves from attacks to specials. Heroes can also be picked up and tossed around to move quickly on a map. Characters are divided into classes and weapons dictate how they level up. There’s a lot more to the game’s many systems and it can be as complicated or as simple as players want which is why it is so accessible.

5 Fire Emblem Engage

Highest Metacritic Score: 80

Genre(s)

Any game in the Fire Emblem series would be a good recommendation because they are solid tactical RPGs. Fire Emblem Engage fits best though because it is the latest and there is a Persona-like summoning players can do in battle. The gimmick behind this one allows heroes to equip magical rings containing heroes from past entries in the series like Marth from the first game on NES.

Mona/Morgana’s Skill Tree in Persona 5 Tactica reflects their typical utility as both a speedy damage dealer and party healer from Persona 5.

Heroes could then fuse themselves with these characters for a timed Super Saiyan-like form in battle. Outside of combat, players could bond with their team to flesh out the dozens of characters in the game. With tons of side quests and classes to master, this tactical RPG will keep players busy for dozens of hours.

Marvel’s Midnight Suns fits in tone better with Persona 5 Tactica as it is a darker story. Players can create their hero and command a team of classic Marvel heroes who are trying to stop the world from succumbing to the dark spell of their mother. Some examples include Blade, Ghost Rider, Wolverine, and many others.

This witch, Lilith, is turning familiar heroes and villains against the team too like Venom. Heroes can move around the map freely before taking actions that are dictated by cards. Outside of combat, there are dialogue trees to further relationships with these heroes to unlock bonding skills and side quests.

3 Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner Overclocked

Highest Metacritic Score: 78

For as old as this franchise is, there aren’t many tactical RPGs before Persona 5 Tactica. The biggest example has to be Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner Overclocked which was a 3DS re-release of a DS game. It also received a good sequel, but players should track this one down first. For those looking for a challenge, this game is it because it is not going to hold anyone’s hand.

The story follows a random group of teens who suddenly get the ability to summon monsters with an app on their phone as Japan is flung into a series of disasters. In battles, players could move their heroes around a grid-based map. When players came into contact with an enemy, the perspective would shift to a classic turn-based design from most of the Shin Megami Tensei games. Weaknesses still played a part in combat too which added to the game’s strategical trappings.

2 Triangle Strategy

Developer(s)
Square Enix, Artdink

Genre(s)

Triangle Strategy is a spiritual successor to Final Fantasy Tactics, which is often heralded as the best tactical RPG around. Unfortunately, it’s harder to play on modern hardware which is why Triangle Strategy is a good, modern substitute. The game follows familiar things in RPGs like warring nations, but what sets this game apart is its dialogue trees. Depending on the decisions made, the game can change, and replaying on New Game+ will allow players to see new outcomes.

Joker’s Skill Tree in Persona 5 Tactica offers despair-inflicting spells and numerous Skills that help set up the party for success.

Combat operates on a grid, like most of the recommendations here. Instead of characters choosing what class to be, they fulfill specific roles. Jens Macher, for example, is classified as an Artisan. He can build ladders which will help characters get to higher elevations faster which is useful even though Jens isn’t a strong character. How players tackle a map is up to them as there are many strategies to consider.

1 Valkyria Chronicles 4

Highest Metacritic Score: 85

Fighting a battle in Valkyria Chronicles 4

This series changed the game when the first Valkyria Chronicles was released in 2008 as a PS3 exclusive. The art style was unique and used watercolors to make it feel both real and like an anime. Unlike most Japanese tactical RPGs, this one did away with the grid system and instead allowed characters to run around within a set range, which Persona 5 Tactica certainly learned from.

When entering into combat mode, players actually had to aim their guns while time stood still. Valkyria Chronicles 4 is the latest iteration and it’s the best one to dig into due to its wide availability. Create a squad of soldiers, level them up, bond outside of battle, and so on. It’s also a Sega franchise, keeping things on brand with Persona 5 Tactica.
