Autism charity founder honoured with british citizen award

Dr. Anuradha Uppaluri, a resident of Moseley, Birmingham, UK has been recognised with the prestigious British Citizen Award (BCA) for 2025. This honour, bestowed upon her at the Palace of Westminster, celebrates her extraordinary contributions to raising awareness about autism and her substantial fundraising efforts for autism-related charities in the UK.

The British Citizen Award is a part of the People’s Honour Awards, announced annually. It recognises individuals who demonstrate selfless and sustained civic leadership, highlighting heroes who strengthen the fabric of society across the United Kingdom. Not only does the BCA celebrate Dr. Uppaluri’s extraordinary contributions, but it also supports those who strive for a brighter future.

Medalists like Dr. Uppaluri are honored on the ‘Roll of Honour’ and are invited to use the post-nominal BCA, serving as a lasting recognition of their achievements. The award ceremony, hosted by TV presenter Matt Allwright, will be attended by BCA Patrons Dame Mary Perkins, Founder of Specsavers, and The Rt Hon Lord Dholakia. Following the ceremony, medalists will enjoy an Open Top Lap of Honour tour and a certificate presentation at another distinguished Westminster venue.

In 2024, Dr. Uppaluri founded Bridging Brains CIC, a non-profit organisation aimed at empowering families with special needs children. Alongside a dedicated group of mothers who have faced similar challenges, she strives to bridge gaps by creating opportunities, fostering inclusion, and ensuring that every child and family feels valued and supported. The organisation offers respite, educational, and well-being sessions for parents, as well as activities like games, sports, music, dance, and arts and crafts for children. By organising social activities such as picnics, day-outs, and fun events, Bridging Brains CIC fosters a supportive community for families.

Each April, Dr. Uppaluri hosts a special fundraising event that has significantly impacted various autism-related organisations. To date, she has raised nearly £30,000, which has been donated to numerous non-profit organisations dedicated to supporting children with special needs throughout the country.

Dr. Uppaluri’s efforts have not gone unnoticed. She has received numerous awards, including the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Jeeyar Educational Trust of UK, the Disability Champion Award from the Women’s Awards in the Midlands, and the South Indian Community Awards from Birmingham. Additionally, she was named the Woman of the Year by the Telangana European Cultural Association (TECA) and was a finalist in both the She Inspires Awards 2022 and Birmingham Awards in 2024.

Dr. Uppaluri’s recognition is a testament to her unwavering dedication, passion, and hard work over the past decade. Her journey began when her son was diagnosed with autism, prompting her to switch from her profession as a dentist to become a full-time caregiver.
