After searching tirelessly for a cure for Bonney, Kuma finally managed to find it on Egghead Island. He was given the information by Dragon, who told him the security around Vegapunk’s new lab was not competent. So, Kuma wasted no time in sailing towards the island. Despite the scientist’s eccentricity, Kuma thought of him as a nice man.
Vegapunk told Kuma that he had the resources needed to perform the surgery that would cure Bonney. Kuma was overjoyed to learn that his daughter would now be able to live beyond her 10th birthday. In return, Vegapunk asked Kuma to become a test subject for his project in order to cover the cost of the surgery. The buccaneer was more than happy to do so. Unfortunately, things took a turn for the worse as Saint Jaygarcia Saturn found out about the deal between the two of the smartest characters in One Piece.
One Piece: 8 Characters With Unknown Past
There is still a lot that fans do not know about these One Piece characters.
The Three Conditions
Saturn stated three conditions that he wanted to be fulfilled before Vegapunk could start operating on Bonney. The first one required Kuma to become a Shichibukai. There was a vacant position in the group after Ace had taken down one of the members. Saturn believed that a pirate with Kuma’s reputation would make the perfect fit. His second condition was for Kuma to become a weapon for the Marines. He wanted the pirate to undergo complicated procedures that would make him stronger and strengthen the Marines.
The third and final condition was the cruelest. Saturn wanted Kuma to give up his sense of individuality and free will. He wanted Kuma to become a mindless cyborg who could be controlled by them. Vegapunk was furious after hearing this particular stipulation, as he knew erasing Kuma’s free will would be tantamount to his murder. However, Kuma was willing to sacrifice everything for the sake of his daughter. In fact, he was overjoyed to learn that he could actually fulfill all the requirements.
Separating Father and Daughter
After Kuma agreed to all the conditions, Saturn dropped another bombshell. He told Kuma that once Bonney’s surgery was complete, he could never meet her again. This was an absolutely heartbreaking moment, as everything Kuma did was for the sake of Bonney. Saturn wanted to keep Bonney hostage until Kuma’s procedure was complete so that they would never come into contact. Kuma asked Saturn to send Bonney back to the Sorbet Kingdom so that she would at least be surrounded by familiar faces. Saturn agreed to this condition, so Bonney’s treatment could finally begin. It took 6 months to finish Bonney’s treatment, after which she was sent to the Sorbet Kingdom under the watchful eye of Dowager Conney.
To be doubly sure, the World Government sent Alpha, a Cipher Pol agent, to keep watch on Bonney. She waited for months to read her father’s letters, but all of them were intercepted by Alpha. The assassin destroyed every single one of them without any remorse. Even after her ninth birthday was over, Bonney did not receive any letters from her father, so naturally she was curious as to what happened. Conney told Bonney that Alpha was working for the World Government. So, they concocted a plan to send Bonney away safely.
The Escape Plan
Conney managed to sneak Bonney out with the help of some trusted people. However, Alpha managed to find out about their plan and gave chase. The Cipher Pol agent was furious, and she wasn’t going to let Bonney slip away from her fingers. Just when it seemed that the young girl would have to go back to being a prisoner, Bonney did something rather remarkable. She remembered her conversation with Kuma, where she asked him about Nika’s appearance.
Kuma told her that Nika had a rubbery body. So, Bonney used her Toshi Toshi no Mi to tap into an alternate future. She used Distorted Future, which increased the size of her fist just like Luffy’s Gear 3rd. The sheer power of the attack was enough to defeat Alpha. With no one else to stop Bonney, she finally left the Sorbet Kingdom.
What Happened After
Bonney’s aim was to find Kuma, which wasn’t going to be easy as the World Government was aware that she had managed to run away. The organization would do everything in its power to make sure that she wouldn’t meet Kuma again. Bonney’s destination was likely Egghead Island, as it was the last place that she and Kuma were together. The World Government was probably aware of this fact, so it would have made its job a lot easier. All the organization had to do was just wait on the island.
Given the fact that Bonney blamed Vegapunk for her father’s condition, it is highly likely that she didn’t get an opportunity to find out the truth. Bonney probably saw her father as a mindless cyborg, but she couldn’t do anything about it, which is why she became a full-time pirate. The upcoming chapters will shed more light on Bonney’s past.
