The new strategy game Age of Mythology: Retold has been released to huge success. Already beloved by long-time fans and newcomers alike, this remake of 2002’s Age of Mythology features many similarities and some much-needed updates that help make a great and worthy successor to the beloved Age of Empires spin-off.
Although long-time fans may know many of the units seen in the game’s Greek Civilization, there are a number of changes in the Retold edition of the game helping inspire other strategy games, and this includes new units. Therefore, veterans and newcomers to the game alike will be attempting to figure out which units they need to focus on the most.
8 Cyclops
Devastating Early Myth Unit
- Trained Via Temples
- Costs 175 Food, 18 Favor
There are several possible myth units that players will gain access to each time they level up in Age of Mythology Retold. The Cyclops is a great early-game choice as it is imposing, powerful, has a lot of health, and is strong against buildings. It also comes with a special attack that allows it to throw, and often kill, a single enemy unit instantly.
While each myth unit has its own advantages, the Centaur is a vital part of many Greek armies for the ability to defeat individual enemy units and cut building health down fast with equal solid quality. A Cyclops won’t seem as intimidating in the late game, but it can be a key component not only in early campaign missions, but also as a great early unit to throw against enemies in multiplayer early, causing more damage than it’s worth.
7 Hoplites
The Strong, Standard Greek Infantry
- Trained Via Military Range
- Costs 50 Food, 40 Gold
Every army needs standard units, and hoplites are a particular strength for the Greek Civilization in Age of Mythology Retold. A great unit that can be trained from the Classical Age, and upgraded in many different ways through the Military Academy and the Armory, Hoplites are already initially stronger than the ordinary infantry units in other civilizations due to their lack of speed.
This makes Hoplites an especially great option for defense, and gives a leg up to players using the Greeks as they can win an evenly-fought infantry battle most of the time. Hoplites are an extremely common unit, but they are not to be underestimated.
6 Toxotes
Powerful Greek Archer Units
- Trained Via Archery Range
- Costs 55 Wood, 35 Gold
Especially strong under the influence of Hades, Toxotes are the common Greek archer uni. They come with a lot of power, particularly in numbers, as a great defensive unit or back line for a larger army. With a distraction like infantry or myth units in front of them, Toxotes can deal a lot of damage to enemy units quickly.
Hades is the Greek God that gives the most buffs to archers, but even without his influence, Toxotes will prove to be a key part of any Greek force in Age of Mythology Retold. With many upgrades available across different buildings, these units are deadly when protected well. However, left alone against charging enemies, they won’t produce a lot of use.
5 Colossus
Late-Game Towering Creatures
- Trained Via Temples
- Costs 350 Gold, 35 Favor
One of the Mythic Age myth units in Age of Mythology Retold, the Colossus is a battering ram of a creature. It is huge, swings a sword to devastating effect, and is excellent against buildings for late-game razing of enemy towns to the ground. While there are a lot of myth units available to the Greek civilization, the Colossus is a particularly brutal one to face off against without heroes. With upgrades or under Hades, it gains extra hit points and can reach over 2000 health at maximum.
Additionally, the Colossus can heal itself by consuming trees and gold mines. This is an even more useful ability considering the lack of ways that Greek units have to heal themselves. Often, their armies are worn down by attrition because of this problem. The Colossus is one of the biggest and most devastating units in Age of Mythology Retold outside the Titans, and it is well worth adding to a Greek army.
4 Helepolis
Slow But Strong Siege Weapons
- Trained Via Fortresses
- Costs 300 Wood, 200 Gold
The strongest siege weapon at the disposal of the Greek civilization comes in the form of the Helepolis. These huge siege towers fire large projectiles that can bring down buildings swiftly. Though they move slowly, they have so many hit points that even when enemies reach them, it will take a lot of time and work to bring them down.
Helepolis units are essential pieces of a Greek civilization army in Age of Mythology Retold. Players can try striking enemies from afar using catapults, but those are much weaker. Siege units that can take a few hits and survive are much rarer, and their value cannot be underestimated.
3 Myrmidon
Unique Devastating Infantry
- Trained Via Fortress (with Zeus)
- Costs 70 Food, 50 Gold
Most Gods in Age of Mythology Retold have a special unique unit that players gain access to by following them. Zeus, who has a focus on infantry bonuses, also comes with a unique infantry unit called Myrmidon. This unit can be trained at the fortress and comes with buffed attack stats against buildings, as well as strong bonuses against any human soldiers not from the Greek civilization.
Myrmidon are one of the best infantry units in any civilization, a stark reminder that this was the specialty of the Greeks in ancient history. The Myrmidon is an even more significant unit in the Retold version of the game, since players have to prioritize building fortresses early in order to advance to the Mythic Age.
2 Chimera
The Best Greek Myth Unit
- Trained Via Temples
- Costs 350 Food, 30 Favor
Though there are many great myth units in the Greek civilization, all of which are important and can be used well, the Chimera is surprisingly the best of the lot. One-on-one, the Chimera can defeat any other myth unit other than those that can one-shot with special abilities. The Chimera’s strength is actually in group fights, because its Fire Breath special attack is one of the few AOE attacks in Age of Mythology Retold. It’s useful it almost feels like a cheat code.
While there are tough choices to make between minor Gods while aging up throughout any game, choosing Artemis at the Mythic Age gives access to the Earthquake God power, huge archer upgrades, and the devastating abilities of the Chimera. This makes her a common choice for players following Poseidon or Hades in the game.
1 Gastraphetoros
Can Devastate Whole Armies
- Trained Via Fortress
- Costs 100 Wood, 60 Gold
Though technically an archer instead of a siege weapon, the damage that a Gastraphetoros unit can inflict on buildings as well as on groups of enemy units makes for the most impressive display available to the Greek civilization. With huge range and crush damage from their shots, these units can take out whatever they need to. In groups, they are monstrous to try and rebuff.
Unique to players worshipping Hades, the Gastraphetoros unit is the very best available to the Greeks in Age of Mythology: Retold. It can back an entire battalion of infantry and do massive damage, giving them a huge boost. They can also shoot at buildings from a much safer distance than other archers are able to do. This makes them the complete package, especially since they always come with the boosts that Hades provides for archers. They are devastating units that can defend various towns and other important locations for players as they expand outwards.
