Sonic Forces Overclocked is an ambitious mod made by fans that serves as a sequel to the original game, making for a brand-new experience compared to the original Sonic Forces. Back in 2017, Sonic Forces was released alongside Sonic Mania as a part of Sonic’s 25th anniversary. In it, Sonic and his friends face Dr. Eggman once again, though this time the mad doctor had accomplished his plans of conquering the world. Players got to control Sonic, his past self, and a fully customizable avatar character.
Unfortunately, Forces was seen as a rather middling title due to a combination of incredibly short levels, repetitive and boring bosses, and wasted story potential regarding the premise of Sonic’s past foes supposedly working together. Despite what the game got wrong, some fans believe that there were several things that Sonic Forces did get right. This has resulted in an active modding scene for the game, with talented gamers looking to enhance the original title in many ways. One group of fans decided to create a direct sequel to Forces, with the mod being released just in time for the holidays.
Sonic Superstars Could Be Getting Shadow the Hedgehog, But There’s a Catch
A Sonic Superstars dataminer claims that Shadow the Hedgehog could be added to the game, though not in a way that many fans might have liked.
Released as Sonic Forces Overclocked on GameBanana by Overclocked Team, this mod transforms the original game into an entirely new experience, adding fully original levels, new obstacles, and fresh mechanics, all while taking inspiration from other 3D Sonic games like Unleashed and Generations. Not only that, but there are animated cutscenes, voiced dialogue from a team of Sonic IDW comic fandubbers known as Adrenaline Dubs, and a prequel episode that brings in Sonic’s metallic rival, Metal Sonic, as a playable character. To celebrate the mod’s release, a trailer was posted on YouTube that highlighted some of the levels, voice acting, and cutscenes.
The story of this mod takes place a few months after Forces, where Infinite and Neo Metal Sonic, two of Sonic’s most powerful adversaries, have teamed up and are using the power of the Phantom Ruby to create their own version of Eggman’s army. Sonic, the Resistance, and the player avatar must work together again to stop their evil ambitions. This fanmade mod has been in development since 2019, so seeing these fans successfully release something of this scale is incredibly impressive, especially for a game that was seen as middling when it first released.
A playthrough of this mod, based on a stream from the developers and voice actors, is around one to two hours, which is impressive considering how much was changed from the original game. This mod was made for the PC version of the game, so fans will need to own a copy of the game on Steam. Sega’s Winter Sale includes Sonic Forces, with its price currently dropped to $10, so the timing of this mod is also incredibly apt.
