Sony Interactive Entertainment released a trailer showcasing what PlayStation 5 users can expect when playing Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora with the video game console. The hardware SIE designed for the PS5 comes with features Ubisoft plans to utilize to make Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora more immersive for those who play the game on the PS5.

The PS5 seems to be poised as the most popular video game console of 2023 based on overall sales. SIE sold 40 million PS5 consoles as of July 16, outpacing Microsoft’s Xbox Series X|S sales on a two-to-one ratio. The PS5’s features could have played a part in the results. The console’s DualSense controller comes with adaptive triggers and haptic feedback that lets players feel more immersed and connected to the game they’re playing. Meanwhile, the 3D audio compatibility of Sony’s Pulse 3D wireless headset provides extra immersion and enhances players’ 3D experience. Many games that were released on the PS5 use these features, and it seems Ubisoft’s Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora will be one of them.

According to the features trailer Sony released, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora will utilize the adaptive triggers in the PS5’s DualSense controller to let players feel every tension their actions produce in-game. As such, players should feel the L2 and R2 buttons tense up accordingly whenever they fire guns, explosives, and rockets, and draw bows to shoot various arrow types in-game. Meanwhile, the DualSense’s haptic feedback triggers whenever the player character slides after a sprint, gets jump boosts from jumping on special flora, and rides their mounts.

Meanwhile, PS5 gamers who own Sony’s Pulse 3D wireless headset can feel further immersed in Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora through the headset’s 3D audio compatibility. However, it’s worth noting that those who don’t have the headset in question can still enjoy 3D audio via built-in TV speakers or compatible analog/USB stereo headphones. Players only need to set their audio devices or TVs to use 3D audio and update their software (and the PS5’s) to the latest version if applicable.

The brief demonstration the trailer provided showed not just how the game will immerse players into it but its potential as a PSVR2 game too. The gameplay, coupled with the Pulse 3D wireless headset and the PSVR2’s haptic feedback and adaptive triggers could make players feel like they’re the player character living and breathing in Pandora. It is unclear if Ubisoft will develop a VR version of Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora after its release. However, those who want to see what that game could look like could try playing Horizon Call of the Mountain in the meantime.
