There are Baldur’s Gate 3 Dark Urge Spoilers in this article.

Updated on April 4, 2024, by Megan Smith: While Baldur’s Gate 3 may not be getting any DLCs as announced by Larian Studios, there is still plenty of fresh content for players to enjoy through playing the various origin characters available. The Dark Urge in BG3 is one of those choices that players are only able to interact with if they have decided to play as this origin. There are multiple reasons in BG3 to play as the Dark Urge, from a new story to even new gear that players can’t gain any other way, with plenty left to do in Baldur’s Gate 3, these are the reasons for trying this origin.

10 A Unique Background

No Other Origin Has it

The Haunted One background in Baldur’s Gate 3

While many of the other origin characters share the backgrounds that the player’s custom character can also select, the Dark Urge origin character comes with its own preselected background that players are unable to have any other way.

While this may not change any of the dialogue in the game, this affects how the player earns inspiration while playing as the Dark Urge, while also giving them a bit of context on what sort of person this character may have been before losing all their memories. Alongside this context is also the skills that the Dark Urge is automatically good at, such as intimidation.

9 New Gear Exclusive To The Urge

Gifts From Their Father

Playing as the Dark Urge does more than give players a new story to explore, as the Dark Urge also has gear that is exclusively available to itself. One of these items is a cape that is arguably one of the best in the game.

This cloak is gifted to the player by their butler for successfully killing the bard, even though it’s a complete accident. This cloak can be worn by anyone and turns the character invisible after they have successfully killed someone. This is perfect for a character like Astarion or Wyll, who can slink into the shadows after dealing lethal damage.

8 A Deeper Connection To The World Of Baldur’s Gate

A Native Of Baldur’s Gate With An Actual Home

While making a normal custom character, players may be able to mention that they are Baldruian, which means they are native to Baldur’s Gate. Players can never actually visit where their character may have lived in the city. Meanwhile, through the story of BG3‘s Dark Urge, players are likely to stand directly in the halls of the Bhaalspawn’s home, as they learn that they once ruled the followers of Bhaal deep under the city.

Baldur’s Gate 3: Best Ways To Use Speak With Dead

Speak With Dead is a spell that does exactly what it sounds like, but there are still creative ways players can make use of it.

Therefore, players may feel that their character, although their mind is all jumbled, has a better connection to the city they finally get to explore in Act Three, while if it is also a player’s second run, they have a similar familiarity to it as well.

7 Interesting New Voice Lines As The Player Explores

While a player’s main character doesn’t talk in the actual dialogue between characters in Baldur’s Gate 3, they are still able to choose a voice for their Tav or Dark Urge. These voice lines are heard when clicking to talk to someone or swapping onto that character after deciding to control another.

When playing as the Dark Urge, the player is likely to hear some new, ominous lines come from their main character, some of which may hint at the dark urges that haunt the character’s mind. These lines are likely to surprise the player as the Dark Urge uncommonly speaks them.

6 Another New NPC To Learn About

A Grotesque Butler That Praises The Player For Bad Deeds

Alongside the interesting story there is to uncover as the Dark Urge, the player will also be introduced to a whole new character that they would have never seen if they had simply picked to play as a regular Tav. Following the scent of death and decay, the horrifying little butler known as Sceleritas Fel makes his presence known to the Dark Urge.

While he refuses to reveal the player’s memories, he encourages them to continue their work as an unrelenting murderer who gives in to the urge within them that tells them to kill every waking second.

5 A Fresh Experience Of Baldur’s Gate 3

Even The Characters Reaction At The Start Of The Game Is Different

Above all else, what makes the Dark Urge such a tempting choice for any player is how it completely changes the story of Baldur’s Gate 3, unlike the regular Tav playthrough that has the player creating their backstory for their character that has little hold on the actual story of BG3.

Like the other Origin characters, the Dark Urge’s past follows them through every act of the game. This will lead to conflicts and tough choices as the player begins to learn more about the Dark Urges’ origins and begins to decide on how they will approach future scenarios.

4 Another Character To Fully Customize

Anyone Could Be The Dark Urge, Even A Cute Gnome

The Character Creator in Baldur's Gate 3

As mentioned, minus the original custom character that isn’t classed as an Origin, the player is unable to change the appearance or class of the likes of Wyll, Shadowheart, or Astarion at the start of the game. This is because their appearances and roles are important to their stories as well as being the same faces a player can recruit into their party.

Meanwhile, the Dark Urge is an original character that allows the player to fully customize them and therefore make them their own. This is because the Dark Urge could be anyone. It’s simply a person with dark intent in their mind, creating the most innocent-looking person only adds to this charm.

3 New Companion Interactions

Alongside creating a fresh experience for players through new story elements, this also includes even more interactions with the companions that have decided to continue following the player through the various acts of Baldur’s Gate 3.

Admitting to the player’s companions these urges they’ve been having can go one of two ways, though it’s always funny to hear the responses of these interesting companions. Astarion may encourage the Dark Urge to play into their urges while another may simply not take the player seriously until it’s too late.

2 The Possibility Of A True Evil Playthrough

Destroy It All For Bhaal

The Dark Urge is by far the best character for a player to use when they have decided to follow an entirely evil playthrough. This will unlock the possibility of having the companion Minthara, although many others may decide to leave in her place.

Baldur’s Gate 3: Funniest Ways To Die

Baldur’s Gate 3 embraces D&D by providing plenty of hilarious moments, even if they unintentionally cause players and their entire party to die.

Seeing how far the Dark Urge can go when they allow themselves to truly murder freely can be an exciting experience that even differs from a normal custom character doing an evil playthrough of the game. It is down to the player to follow that path.

1 Resisting The Urge Leads To Another Epic Tale

Resist The Dark Father And Be Reborn

Arguably better than an evil run is a Dark Urge that has chosen to resist these horrid feelings and desperately try to start a new life. Waking up on the Mind Flayer ship with no memories of the foul deeds the Dark Urge has done in the past can make for an easier time when attempting to turn over a new leaf.

However, it won’t be easy as every encounter will be haunted by the urge to cause some sort of destruction. Successfully resisting will entertain players as they still find their answers while proving they are more than the thoughts in their heads. This is by far one of the best things about the Dark Urge in BG3 as players are truly allowed to experiment with this Origin’s story.
