Of all the casters in Baldur’s Gate 3, Sorcerers have the most control over the effects of their spells thanks to the Metamagic class feature. With this, a Sorcerer can double-cast a spell, prevent a Fireball (or other AoE damage spell) from hurting allies, cast spells when silenced, and much more.

Baldur’s Gate 3: Best Level 6 Spells, Ranked

Players looking to completely dominate their enemies in Baldur’s Gate 3 should prioritize these Level 6 spells.

Abilities like Haste and Greater Invisibility are more useful in a Sorcerer’s hands, and spells like Sleet Storm and Fireball are much more reliable when Careful Spell can prevent them from damaging party members. This ranking of the best Sorcerer BG3 spells recommends a variety of useful spells that players should pick up as soon as they become available.

Haste

BG3 Best Sorcerer Spells Haste

  • Haste Effect: Target yourself or an ally to become Hastened. The creature has a +2 bonus to AC, Advantage on Dexterity Saving throws, its Movement Speed is doubled, and can take one additional Action per turn.

Level 3

Standard Action

9m (30ft)

Haste is one of the best spells in Baldur’s Gate 3, and is worth picking on every class it is made available to. Sorcerers must reach Level 5 to pick up this spell, which grants several bonuses to allies when used. The target of Haste will gain 2 AC, Advantage on DEX saving throws, doubled Movement Speed, and an additional Standard Action.

This all seems pretty fantastic up front, and it really is when used properly. But because the Haste effect relies on the caster’s Concentration, being interrupted (or casting another Concentration spell) will make the target Lethargic. This gets rid of the Haste buff, and essentially skips that character’s next turn as they recover. Be careful with Haste, but with proper planning, it’s easily the best support spell in BG3.

Sleet Storm

BG3 Best Sorcerer Spells Sleet Storm

  • Sleet Storm Effect: Call forth a storm that douses fire, creates an Ice Surface, and forces spellcasters to succeed at a Concentration Saving throw or lose Concentration.

Standard Action

18m (60ft), with an area of 9m (30ft)

Sleet Storm is a spell that Sorcerers can also pick up at Level 5 that remains useful well into the endgame. Sleet Storm, and the similar level 4 spell Ice Storm, will cover an area in Difficult Terrain that characters can slip on, ending their turn as they become Prone.

Baldur’s Gate 3: Best Cloaks (& How To Get Them)

Cloaks may have been somewhat overlooked in Baldur’s Gate 3, but these choices can offer some decent benefits – or at least a few style points.

Ice surfaces in general are powerful in BG3, and Sleet Storm lets Sorcerers start taking advantage of this powerful AoE CC relatively early in the game. It lasts up to 10 turns, too, but is reliant on Concentration.

Greater Invisibility

BG3 Best Sorcerer Spells Greater Invisibility

  • Greater Invisibility Effect: Turn a creature Invisible. Attacks against it have Disadvantage, and its attacks have Advantage.

The ability to sneak past enemies is a powerful one in BG3. Though the party won’t get experience from avoiding combat, it’s just as good for getting away from a fight as it is for setting up before one.

An improvement on Invisibility, Greater Invisibility specifically gives its target Advantage on its next attack, while attacks against it have Disadvantage (if enemies can even detect it, that is). Sorcerers can use this on a Rogue to give them an optimal entrance to combat with a Sneak Attack, use it themselves to get out of melee combat without triggering reactions, and more.

Counterspell

BG3 Best Sorcerer Spells Counterspell

  • Counterspell Effect: Nullify another creature’s spell as a reaction. The spell must be 3rd Level or lower or the Sorcerer must pass an increasingly difficult Ability Check.

Reaction

Arguably the most important Reaction for a caster to have in BG3 is Counterspell. This spell slot lvl 3 spell can be used by Sorcerers after they reach Level 5, though it’s not necessarily one that players want to use.

Players have the opportunity to recruit several characters to their camp in Baldur’s Gate 3.

Counterspell is effective at canceling spells of, at most, Spell Slot lvl 3, which cuts out a huge portion of spells that players come up against in late Act 2 and beyond. Still, it’s worth trying to cancel high-level spells with Counterspell, because it could still work – but lower-level enemy spells can be nullified with ease.

Misty Step

BG3 Best Ranger Spells Misty Step

  • Misty Step Effect: Surrounded by silver mist, you teleport to an unoccupied space you can see.

Range or Area

Arguably the best “movement” spell in BG3, especially for being a lvl 2 spell, Misty Step is a spell that lets the caster teleport to a spot they can see within the normal casting range. This includes locations at different heights, and can be used in the middle of combat without triggering any Opportunity Attacks.

The best part of Misty Step, aside from being able to get out of sticky situations in a flash, is that it only requires a Bonus Action. If the Sorcerer finds themselves surrounded by enemies, just Misty Step to a higher spot, and cast a Fireball at the horde below – Misty Step doesn’t prevent players from using other Standard Actions that same turn, after all.

Fireball

BG3 Best Sorcerer Spells Fireball

  • Fireball Effect: Shoot a bright flame from your fingers that explodes upon contact, torching everything in the vicinity for 8d6Damage TypesFire damage.

Range or Area

Spell Effect Length

Level 3

Standard Action

18m (60ft), with an area of 4m (13ft)

N/A

Fireball is one of the most iconic spells in Dungeons and Dragons, and in BG3, it’s just as unpredictably destructive as the TTRPG. When cast at a location, Fireball will deal instant Fire damage to those affected by its wide-hitting initial explosion, and possibly set the area ablaze with Fire as well. This affects both allies and enemies alike, but Sorcerers can use Metamagic to prevent this.

Using the Careful Spell Metamagic, Fireball won’t outright obliterate teammates but will still hurt enemies. It will still set the area on fire, and potentially hurt allies via environmental damage. But thanks to Metamagic, Sorcerers have access to the “safest” version of Fireball of any class in BG3. But do try using the Twinned Spell Metamagic on Fireball for something a bit less safe.
