Key Takeaways

  • A current-gen console version of Divinity: Original Sin 2 – Definitive Edition leaked online via an age rating.
  • While the 2018 game never received a dedicated PS5 and Xbox Series X/S version, it’s already playable on current-gen consoles thanks to their backward compatibility.
  • Larian is currently also working on two other projects, which it recently said will be based on original IPs.

According to some newly surfaced evidence, Larian Studios‘ next project may be a current-gen console version of Divinity: Original Sin 2. This potential re-release might catch some fans by surprise, especially since Larian was thought to be focused on entirely different projects up until right now.

Back in April 2024, the Baldur’s Gate 3 developer announced that it had started working on two new games based on original IPs. Both were described as being in the early stages of development at the time, with the studio promising to share more details about them once it has something to show.

Baldur’s Gate 3’s publishing director talks about Dragon Age: The Veilguard, revealing their thoughts on BioWare’s upcoming action RPG.

But it seems that Larian is currently also pursuing at least one other project, as indicated by the fact that Divinity: Original Sin 2 – Definitive Edition just received a new PEGI rating. The classification, originally spotted by Gematsu, was published on November 6, with its biggest novelty compared to the game’s earlier rating being the mention of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. Both can already run the last-gen versions of the RPG thanks to their backward compatibility, but neither have yet received dedicated ports of Divinity: Original Sin 2.

While the PEGI database entry also mentions the PC version of the game, this is most likely because the new rating got consolidated with the existing one. After all, Divinity: Original Sin 2 – Definitive Edition is already available on PC, where it launched in August 2018, along with its PlayStation and Xbox ports. The improved version of the RPG was given away to all owners of the PC original, which hit the market a year earlier.

Divinity: Original Sin 2 Re-Release Seems Like a Safe Play for Larian Right Now

Given how Baldur’s Gate 3 propelled Larian to new heights, re-releasing Divinity: Original Sin 2 for current-gen platforms might help the company bring it to an entirely new audience now that its brand is at an all-time high. This newly leaked version of the game hence seems like a relatively low-risk, high-reward move for the Belgian studio. One thing that remains to be seen is what kind of improvements Larian might offer on the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. For reference, the last-gen consoles already run the game at 4K, with the Xbox One X doing that natively, while the PS4 Pro upscales the RPG to a so-called checkerboard 4K resolution. However, both consoles only run Divinity: Original Sin 2 at 30 frames per second.

Divinity: Original Sin 3 Is Still on the Cards

Whatever the case may be, what’s certain is that this purported re-release won’t be the final addition to the RPG series. That’s according to Larian CEO Swen Vincke, who recently said that a third Divinity game is “definitely” going to happen at some point.
