Larian Studios’ massive fantasy RPG Baldur’s Gate 3 has made waves once again by surpassing the massive milestone of 10 million copies sold. Larian is also working on growing Baldur’s Gate 3 further with additional patching and support for additional content.

Ever since its release in August 2023, Baldur’s Gate 3 has shattered expectations and drawn the attention of millions of players to Larian Studios’ unique approach to player freedom and expression. That streak of attention for Baldur’s Gate 3 has continued into 2024, with Game of the Year honors at DICE following a six-category sweep at last year’s Game Awards.

Baldur’s Gate 3 Surpasses 10 Million Units Sold

The latest sales milestone for Baldur’s Gate 3 was revealed in a Twitter thread posted by Michael Douse, Director of Publishing at Larian Studios. As part of a discussion regarding the game’s community team and Larian’s communication with fans, Douse revealed that the game has sold “way over” 10 million copies. There’s little doubting that the game’s popular acclaim played a role in getting to that number, since Baldur’s Gate 3 even returned to the top of sales charts months after its full release.

The information about Baldur’s Gate 3 sales numbers came as part of Douse’s larger point, which had to do with community communication. Douse was speaking of the sheer speed with which the game’s player base grew since it launched after a period of nearly three years in Early Access. Douse warned against the toxicity directed at the Baldur’s Gate 3 community team and developers at Larian Studios.

There’s no doubting that Baldur’s Gate 3 is extremely popular at the moment. Even without the raw sales numbers to look at, the volume and intensity of discussion that surrounds a game long months after the peak of its release window speaks to how many players continue to care about the game, even if it sometimes tips over into toxic behavior. Despite multiple updates and hotfixes, Baldur’s Gate 3 still suffers from stability issues in some areas. And though Larian spoke of its plans for official Baldur’s Gate 3 mod tools, the pace of fixes and additions isn’t enough for the community’s more impatient sections.

That said, it’s unlikely that Larian will consider winding down support for the game any time soon, not with its commercial performance still so strong. There’s a good chance that Baldur’s Gate will see more sales milestones surpassed in 2024 as well.
