New reports and rumors suggest that Microsoft is solidifying its plans to reveal the next major Call of Duty game, which leaks claim holds the Black Ops Gulf War subtitle. The reports come amid a flood of leaks and other headline making developments at Xbox, as the company prepares to reveal its slate of upcoming games, Call of Duty included.

Persistent rumors and other leaks have seemingly outed the existence of the next Call of Duty. As far back as 2022, leaks of Call of Duty Black Ops concept artwork suggested that developers Raven Software and Treyarch Games were working on a Call of Duty set in the early 1990s. The main conflict of that era was the 1990-1991 Gulf War, in which a United States-led military coalition forced the Iraqi military out of Kuwait.

Microsoft May Be Planning to Unveil Call of Duty Black Ops Gulf War in Summer 2024

A report from news outlet Insider Gaming suggests that Microsoft is planning to unveil the next game in the Call of Duty Black Ops franchise around the time of its 2024 Xbox Showcase. The showcase may be scheduled for as early as June 2024, coinciding with the Summer Games Fest. However, Insider Gaming said that rather than be revealed at the showcase itself, Call of Duty Black Ops Gulf War will be unveiled prior to the show, in a “traditional” manner. The move is a departure from the current reveal strategy, where new Call of Duty titles are revealed during live events held within the free-to-play Call of Duty Warzone. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 was revealed within Warzone via a live event that included special rewards for participants.

As for what this “traditional” manner is, the Insider Gaming report suggests that it may be a dedicated livestream held sometime prior to the Summer Games Fest (scheduled for June 7, 2024). The livestream could include a look at the game’s single-player component. Raven Software is said to be developing the Call of Duty Black Ops Gulf War campaign as an open-world experience, inspired by the open world missions used in Modern Warfare 3 and bearing a similarity more akin to a Far Cry title than the typical vision of a linear Call of Duty story mode. A different reveal at a later date would then be focused on multiplayer, which is being handled by Treyarch games.

Call of Duty Black Ops Gulf War looks to be trying to break the mold when it comes to Call of Duty campaigns, by focusing on a structure that seems altogether different from what’s been tried before in Call of Duty. This falls in line with the legacy of the Black Ops franchise, which has gained a reputation for experimenting within Call of Duty‘s military-themed confines. Similarly, the Gulf War setting allows developers to create a game based on recognizably modern combat and familiar Call of Duty weapons while still evoking the mood of a specific time and place.

Call of Duty: Black Ops

Call of Duty: Black Ops is a series of Call of Duty games developed by Treyarch. The series began in 2008 with Call of Duty: World at War, which acted as a prologue to the series, and there have been a further five games since.

Along with the change in development studios, the Black Ops series also differentiates itself from the other Call of Duty games by having a separate timeline, different weapons, and covert operation missions.
