Freedom Wars, a PlayStation Vita-exclusive title, is getting a modern remaster courtesy of its original developers. Titled Freedom Wars Remastered, the action game is slated for release on January 10, 2025 for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and PC via Steam. When the game was initially released on PS Vita, Freedom Wars was published by Sony, but the remaster will see Bandai Namco take the helm.

The PlayStation Vita is Sony’s second handheld console, released in December 2011. While it was praised for its impressive graphics and boasted several shared games with the PlayStation 4, the handheld console’s high cost, lack of exclusive triple-A titles, and Sony’s neglect led the Vita to its downfall. Since then, many classic PlayStation Vita titles once stuck on the handheld console have jumped to other platforms, such as Fate/stay night REMASTERED recently arriving on Switch and PC.

Freedom Wars Remastered will soon find a new home on modern platforms. The action game was created in response to Sony losing Monster Hunter exclusivity on its handhelds. As a result, Freedom Wars shares many gameplay similarities with Capcom’s popular franchise. In the game, players face off against Abductors, large mechanical creatures, in order to collect their parts and craft better equipment. While defeating Abductors is the central objective, players must also rescue citizens trapped inside these unmanned robots before destroying them.

Freedom Wars Remastered is a game set in a dystopian future in which humanity is struggling to survive. The situation is so dire that simply being born is considered a crime, and newborns are sentenced to millions of years of prison time and dubbed as Sinners. To reduce their sentences, Sinners join forces with others to gather resources or embark on rescue missions. By earning Entitlement Points, players can gain new rights with their wardens and unlock additional gameplay features.

Freedom Wars Remastered will introduce several enhancements, including 4K resolution, 60 FPS performance on PlayStation and PC, improved textures, an overhauled crafting system, more difficulty levels, and various other upgrades to its overall gameplay. Freedom Wars is considered one of the best PS Vita-exclusive games, and now more players will finally get to experience it.

In an interview with PlayStation Blog Japan, Takashi Tsukamoto, the original director of Freedom Wars at Dimps, mentioned that the team always wanted to make a sequel to the game, but the opportunity never arose. When Sony offered up the game’s license for a remaster, Dimps sought a publisher, and Bandai Namco stepped in, leading to the creation of Freedom Wars Remastered.
