EA Sports College Football 25 players are calling for changes to be made to the current state of the game’s player substitution, with many feeling that the feature is too difficult to function quickly and smoothly in the middle of a game. The player substituting system, made all the more pertinent due to EA Sports College Football 25‘s new Wear & Tear player mechanic, is in need of some streamlining based on player response.

Ending an 11-year hiatus, EA Sports College Football 25 ended the over decade-long drought of a proper college football sim title. With such a long gap between entries, hype among college football fans was at an all-time high leading up to its release, with the massively pre-ordered game causing numerous server issues for EA Sports College Football 25 players who had early access. While the title’s servers seem to be working better now, attention has now turned to some pain points within gameplay, including subbing players.

Aimed to enhance the realism of football by reflecting physical challenges faced by players, adding another layer of strategy to play calling and position management. As players become worn out and/or injured as a game progresses, the game must be paused so that the roster can be shuffled on the depth chart, and can only be done on an individual basis. There currently isn’t a mass substitution option, nor is there an option for formation-specific substitutions, commonplace in real-life college football. Cumbersome substitutions could especially impact online play, particularly against a hurry-up offense in EA Sports College Football 25.

There are a variety of other issues with EA Sports College Football 25, which the development team is currently working on to fix. EA recently shared a message with players on X/Twitter detailing the changes and fixes to EA Sports College Football 25 that are being focused on first, which includes tuning up the Super Sim Logic system, fixing the inability to load a previously established online dynasty, and various fixes to inaccuracies with rosters, likenesses, and logos. The player substitution system issue was unfortunately unmentioned, although there’s a chance it’s being addressed anyway.



Despite a handful of issues with the game, the commercial success of EA Sports College Football 25 shows a desire for more sports games. Offering a fresh alternative from the regular annual big three of NBA 2K, Madden, and MLB: The Show, EA Sports College Football 25‘s immense popularity shows the potential viability of additional sports video game offerings. While there are no plans for a college equivalent or other alternative take on another major sport, EA Sports College Football 25‘s success could open the door for some in the future.
