  • The fan imagines Gravemind as a Flood-infected biomechanical monster.
  • Fan concepts highlight “Dead Cathedral” and “7 Headed Leviathan” forms.
  • Fans express interest in this chilling idea, and it will be interesting to see if the Flood shows up in future games.

An imaginative Halo fan recently shared some nightmarish concepts of The Flood infecting the equally dreaded Gravemind and transforming it into an even more terrifying biomechanical monster. Master Chief has faced off against some fierce enemies throughout the Halo series, but few are as frightening as the Flood, a parasitic organism that has been sending chills down the spine of even the most battle-hardened Spartan ever since the original Halo: Combat Evolved.

Unwittingly created by the ancient Precursors, the Flood needs to consume sentient life to sustain itself, which it does in the Halo games by infecting UNSC and Covenant forces alike. This results in a variety of dangerous Flood forms that can be a challenge for Master Chief to take down due to their tendency to re-infect the same fallen enemies over and over. Halo 2 introduced the Gravemind, an even more nightmarish abomination that controls the Flood from deep within Installation 05 on the Delta Halo – and this is but one of the hive minds serving as the final evolution of the monstrous parasite.

Over 20 Years Later, Halo: Combat Evolved is Still Producing Hilarious Fails

A gamer experiences a hilarious fail in Halo: Combat Evolved while showing the game to a friend over two decades after its release.

For many Halo fans, Gravemind and the Flood couldn’t possibly get any more freighting, but a brave Reddit user by the handle of Cynder_024 dared to imagine what it would be like if the former could infect not only the latter, but machinery as well. The result is a pair of haunting greyscale concept images of Gravemind with a new, biomechanical look that combines undead flesh with metal. They also gave names to these twisted forms: the first is called “Dead Cathedral -with a choir of thousands voices-,” while the second is dubbed “7 Headed Leviathan.”

Biomechanical Gravemind Concepts Are Prime Halo Nightmare Fuel

Cynder_024 started this concept with a previous drawing of an infected Spartan II trooper that had their skeleton, flesh, and Mjolnir armor gruesomely merged into one by an alternate reality version of the Flood, and they plan to branch out further with a sauropod-like MAC in the future. So far, other Halo fans have expressed interest in this bone-chilling idea, even as they are grateful to never have encountered such a creature in the games.

While the Flood and Gravemind were seemingly destroyed by Master Chief and the Arbiter at the end of Halo 3, there is always the chance that these deadly enemies could return to the Halo universe someday. Hopefully they never develop the kind of abilities featured in Cynder_024’s concept art, or the UNSC could be faced with a threat that truly dwarfs the Forerunners and Banished from more recent Halo entries.
