One creative Pokemon fan is reimagining Mewtwo as an Ice-type. Mewtwo is one of the Pokemon series’ original Legendary pocket monsters, making its debut in first-generation titles Pokemon Red and Blue. Its popularity perhaps culminated when it was featured in the franchise’s first feature film, but the Pokemon has remained a fan-favorite over the decades.
As a popular character within the series, Mewtwo is no stranger to creative reimaginings from fans. Notably, one Pokemon Scarlet and Violet fan created paradox forms of Mega Mewtwo X and Y. When it comes to Pokemon fan art, turning popular creatures on their head by introducing new evolutions, fusing two characters together, and even swapping types are all common practices. While imaginative artists use all sorts of creatures from various generations of the series, popular Pokemon like Mewtwo are commonly the subject of such pieces. That said, fans have likely never seen the Gen 1 Legendary quite like this before.
Reddit user and active fan artist JJonnie shared their recent Pokemon piece that reimagines Mewtwo as an epic Ice-type creature, aptly named Mewthrice. The artist cleverly weaves in the naming mechanic between Mew and Mewtwo, all while alluding to the creature’s Ice-type nature in the moniker. JJonnie is popular within the Pokemon fan art community due to their inspired transformations that typically involve swapping types for all sorts of pocket monsters across generations. For example, the Pokemon fan turned Machamp into a Rock-type. The artist has also recently tackled popular Pokemon like Heracross, Gyarados, Decidueye, Eevee, and Dragonite to name a few.
Not only does JJonnie design fantastic pieces of art like this, but the talented fan also writes thoughtful Pokedex entries for most of their creations. Mewthrice, of course, is no different. JJonnie describes Mewthrice as “the revived cyborg” Pokemon. According to the artist, Mewtwo transformed into Mewthrice after being “fatally wounded” in battle. The Pokemon now sports a cryogenic suit that keeps its cells from degenerating. Needless to say, if canon, Mewthrice would likely rank among the best Ice-type Pokemon.
Unlike the cryogenically frozen Mewthrice, Mewtwo remains alive and well in the Pokemon series. The franchise’s current mainline RPG Pokemon Scarlet and Violet recently held a Mew and Mewtwo raid event that allowed players to battle and capture the formidable Legendary. Trainers fortunate enough to get their hands on Mewtwo during the event can use their newly obtained creature in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet‘s second (and presumably final) wave of DLC coming on December 14.
