Turbo Granny’s Unique Abilities

Even Among Yokais, Turbo Granny’s Capabilities Are Unmatched

Yokais, in general, are gifted with extraordinary powers and abilities that set them apart from mortal beings. Physically stronger than humans, these supernatural beings have unique powers, which are often reflected in their titles. Interestingly, these distinctive capabilities are sometimes traits or talents the hostile spirits possessed when they were human beings- like Acrobatic Silky, who used to be a skilled acro dancer before her unfortunate demise.

Turbo Granny, who is also known as the 100 km/hr Granny, is gifted with the ability to run three times as fast as the fastest human being. Naturally, she is extremely prideful of her special talent and is confident that she can outrun anyone she crosses paths with. This special capability allowed her to increase her influence during the modern era, in which she terrorized most of Japan. However, Turbo Granny’s title should not give one the wrong idea that her powers are only limited to running at high speeds.

Like most other yokais, 100 km/hr Granny possesses the ability to fuse with other spirits by forming a pact. In chapter 7 of the manga, Momo and Okarun are desperately trying to reach Kamikoshi City with Turbo Granny and Earthbound Spirit Crab chasing them closely. During the pursuit, the two spirits manage to corner the terrified duo, after which they go for the kill by merging with each other. 100 km/hr Granny-fused Earthbound Spirit Crab not only retains the speed of the former but also gains the strength of the latter, making them an extremely terrifying combo.

Dandadan: The Evil Eye, Explained

The Evil Eye is known in various cultures, especially in the Levant, but what is it in Dandadan?

Turbo Granny’s fused state with Earthbound Spirit Crab gives her another frightening ability known as territory control. During their escape from Shono City, Okarun and Momo managed to get an advantage over their supernatural enemies by trapping the Earthbound Spirit Crab at a bathhouse with a supply of hot water from a natural spring. As Momo expected, the hot water made the crab’s meat firm, which in turn slowed down its movements. Ayase and Ken tried to use the chance to escape, but they were shocked to learn that Turbo Granny and Earthbound Spirit Crab used the territory control ability to call upon the possessed spirits from a nearby cemetery to go after the duo.

Interestingly, when Okarun and Momo visited 100 km/hr Granny at her tunnel, she used the same ability to overwhelm the two friends. She manifested two gigantic heads on both ends of the tunnel, turning it into a prison for Ayase and Ken. Turbo Granny then went a step further to restrain Momo by creating a cage of hands that caught her off-guard. While territory control is dangerous, 100 km/hr Granny’s most unpredictable ability has to be luck.

After Turbo Granny was trapped in a maneki-neko doll, she inexplicably gained the capability to bestow luck onto others. But since she has no control over it, she can sometimes end up granting it to her enemies as well. In the Cursed House Arc, chapter 34 of the manga, Momo is taking a bath in a hot spring when members of the Kito Family try to assault her. But she manages to escape unharmed as the assailants are crushed under walls and statues that mysteriously collapse on top of them. In this particular case, Turbo Granny’s luck turns out to be a blessing for Momo who found herself in a helpless situation.

Turbo Granny’s Spiritual Powers

Turbo Granny’s Unmatched Spiritual Abilities That Strike Fear in Others

Turbo Granny’s most frightening spiritual power has to be placing curses on others. Whenever she is challenged to a race or if a victim were to run away from her in fear following an unexpected encounter, she can place a curse on them by catching up. Usually, this means that Turbo Granny has possessed the person that grants her a range of abilities previously unimaginable.

The infectious nature of the curse allows Turbo Granny to attack anyone her possessed victim lays their eyes on. This could be as simple as giving someone a nosebleed to something far more sinister like a heart attack. Once possessed, a person is not left with many options. The only way a victim can undo the curse is either through exorcism or by getting back the reproductive organs she has stolen.

The Yokai serve as both plot devices and thematic symbols, enriching the series’ exploration of cultural heritage through a contemporary lens.

Apart from cursing others, the 100 km/hr Granny has another dangerous trick up her sleeve. She can shapeshift in a blink of an eye which makes it extremely difficult to keep track of her. Turbo Granny can assume a physical body when she needs to or she can simply transform into a spiritual body. Both forms come with different advantages.

Turbo Granny’s spiritual body gives her immunity against almost all direct physical attacks. Furthermore, it gives her the advantage to possess whomever she wants. Her curses and shapeshift powers combine together to make her an extremely unpredictable adversary.

100 km/hr Granny is not just quick but also possesses the power to call upon the dead spirits using territory control. Furthermore, fusing with other spirits then allows her to cover up her weaknesses and become a formidable threat. Dandadan features several mysterious yokais with dangerous abilities and powers at their disposal, but very few of them can go toe-to-toe against the evil incarnate, Turbo Granny.
