  • Destiny 2 players have noticed a connection between the Hazardous Propulsion armor and Failsafe’s AI core from Nessus, sparking theories.
  • While a similar concept exists in the Last Wish raid, fans are eager to see if Failsafe’s AI could gain mobility through the exotic quest.

Destiny 2 fans have spotted a detail implying that Failsafe, the scatter-brained AI on Nessus, might come to the same fate as a character from Borderlands 2. The theory comes from a new exotic armor piece previewed ahead of the new Destiny 2 expansion, “The Final Shape.”

In the lore of Destiny 2, the Exodus Black was a ship designed to carry human colonists to a distant star system centuries before the Guardians came into being. The ship crashed on the planetoid Nessus, and Failsafe remained there alone for centuries as the crew was slowly picked off. The abandoned AI was left behind for centuries, and eventually developed a depressed alter ego that exists alongside an alternate, cheery disposition. The player finds Failsafe during the year one events of Destiny 2, and afterward functions as a quest giver and world vendor.

Features Destiny 2 Could Use From Other Looter-Shooters

Alongside improvements from companion apps and sites, Destiny 2 could benefit from features of other games in the looter-shooter genre.

But some eagle-eyed fans think they’ve spotted portents to Failsafe’s future in a new trailer getting Destiny 2 players ready for The Final Shape. Fans have noticed that an element on the front of the Hazardous Propulsion armor bears a striking resemblance to Failsafe’s AI core that players address when interacting on Nessus. Plus, the armor allows Titan classes to fire “Exodus Rockets” when using their class ability, possibly related to the Exodus Black or the Exodus program. Players have concluded that all this could mean that Failsafe, or at least a portion of the AI, could be downloaded into the armor itself.

In Destiny 2, there’s a long, storied history of Guardians using fallen enemies as weapons, but some Guardians are hoping this would be the first time a weapon or armor piece could talk back. This twist would take a cue from another notable looter-shooter, specifically the “Out of Body Experience” quest from Borderlands 2. In this quest, the player helps a pacifistic EXP Loader robot that has shed its AI core find a new body. At the end of the quest the player has the option to put Loader #1340 into a shield or a shotgun, and will continue to speak with the player during use.

Destiny 2 Players Want More Time With Failsafe

Technically a similar situation is already possible for those who know how to beat the Last Wish raid. By performing specific tasks, players can get Failsafe transmitted into their head, and will provide commentary on the raid the entire time. It’s not quite the same as the permanent body swap implied in the fan theory, but it is nice to let Failsafe finally see other places instead of the wreckage of the Exodus Black. In fact, many subscribers to this theory are excited about the possibility of allowing Failsafe a sense of mobility for the first time in a few centuries. Bungie hasn’t provided any details or insight into the armor or its origins, so Destiny 2 fans will have to wait until the exotic quest releases with The Final Shape to see what becomes of their beloved split-personality AI.
