Highlights

  • Goku’s True Ultra Instinct technique allows him to use the technique better than ever before and makes him a potential candidate to be the next ‘Angel’ attendant for Universe 7.
  • Vegeta’s Ultra Ego transformation gives him the power of destruction and makes him a strong contender to succeed Beerus as Universe 7’s God of Destruction.
  • While the Saiyans may be on the path to becoming the strongest mortals in Universe 7, Goku and Vegeta may decline the responsibility due to their strong values of helping the innocent and their aversion to causing mass destruction.

Ever since the introduction of Beerus and Whis into the Dragon Ball franchise back in 2013’s Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods movie, fans have been speculating about the future of their roles in the universe. With Beerus being the supreme deity and Destroyer of Universe 7, he has access to all the abilities of a God of Destruction, including masterful use of the Hakai technique, which allows him to wield unparalleled power. Whis has a different move set but his Ultra Instinct makes him even more mighty than the God he serves.

Goku and Vegeta are characters who started as bitter enemies but eventually became rivals who need each other to push their limits in a dynamic so engaging that the Saiyans now wield the power of Angels and Destroyers. This, however, does raise some questions. Seeing as how they may be undergoing secret training to take up the positions of their governing deities, let’s see if Goku and Vegeta may eventually rule Universe 7.

Could Goku Ascend Higher Than Any Mortal Before Him Has?

Dragon Ball Super Goku after achieving Ultra Instinct

In the Tournament of Power, Goku unlocked his Ultra Instinct. However, this was a technique that he could not master immediately as he first started with his Ultra Instinct Sign/Omen and would only perfect the technique during his final fight against Jiren. Moreover, this form came with just as many risks and it wouldn’t be until the end of the Granolah arc that Goku would perfect the technique to best suit himself.

This goes to show the volatile nature of Ultra Instinct. The main thing to note about it is that Ultra Instinct is not a transformation like how Goku uses it, rather it is a technique that comes from adopting a mindset and entering a certain state on the battlefield. This is how Angels use it, as they are always in this state. The technique requires users to shed all emotion and clear their minds, something which goes against Gokus’ nature as a Saiyan.

Whis

In the Granolah arc, Goku unlocks his True Ultra Instinct by combining the technique with his natural Saiyan powers to suit him best. Since he is the only known mortal with the ability to use it and has received direct training from Whis, many fans theorize that Goku is being primed to be the next ‘Angel’ attendant for Universe 7, especially because now, his True Ultra Instinct allows him to use the technique better than ever before.

Though Goku’s overall strength and mastery over Ultra Instinct aren’t even in the same realm as Whis, it is known that the technique has varying degrees of precision, even among Angels. Since the Ultra Instinct used by Whis is still weaker than that of the Grand Priest, Goku can refine his True Ultra Instinct even further. This path is the one that makes the most sense for him as he is a pure Martial Artist who values skill, precision and finesse, making Ultra Instinct the perfect next step for Goku.

Vegeta Seems Like The Perfect Candidate to Succeed Beerus As Universe 7’s God of Destruction

Vegeta in Ultra Ego Form

Vegeta is a character that has been chasing Goku for far too long and, in doing so, he has always been a step behind him. In the Tournament of Power, Vegeta also tried to achieve Ultra Instinct but found it to go against his nature, so he chose to achieve power another way, which he found with the help of Beerus at the very start of the Granolah arc.

Beerus told the Prince that he should seek power for himself and never just to reach Goku. The reason Goku does so well is his love for fighting and his push for self-improvement, leaving Vegeta to chase him for his own pride. Due to this, Vegeta learns to cast off the sins of his past and adopt a new mindset that prioritizes seeking strength and power for himself, forging a path separate from his rival and culminating in the amazing Ultra Ego.

Dragon Ball Super - Beerus

Much like Ultra Instinct, the power of the Destroyers is more of a concept and a technique and Ultra Ego is purely the transformation made by Vegeta to inhabit and use this power. The mechanics of this technique are completely different from Ultra Instinct, however. Instead of clearing one’s mind to avoid damage, Ultra Ego completely immerses one in battle and encourages taking damage as it ends up making the user even stronger.

With this increase in strength, Ultra Ego becomes the ultimate offensive tool that can house the Power of Destruction, able to destroy entire planets on a whim. However, Vegeta’s usage of the technique is very recent and has not been given enough time to allow for refinement as it has been shown that the form can indeed take too much damage, leading to much stronger offensive output at the cost of great damage done to themselves. This path is perfect for Vegeta as he is an all-out brawler, caring more for dealing damage than finesse in battle.

Will the Saiyans Rule the Universe?

Dragon Ball Dads Vegeta and Goku

It has been made very clear that Goku is being trained by Whis and has the Divine Technique of the Angels, whereas Vegeta is being trained by Beerus and can use the Divine Technique of the Gods of Destruction. These paths that the characters are going down are very clearly setting up the Saiyans to be the strongest mortals in Universe 7, perhaps even taking over the roles of their mentors when the time comes.

However, there are just as many reasons why they would decline the responsibility, with the biggest being indifference to life. It should be known that Gods of Destruction are not evil, they destroy because they need to. This destruction of entire planets and civilizations may seem cruel, but this is done for the betterment of the entire universe, as well as to set the stage for the continuation of more life. The Destroyers must get rid of all stagnation and rot from the universe so the mortal level does not decline and so more life can be made.

vegeta and goku super Saiyan blue

Though this has its merits and is understandable, standing by idly while millions are forced to perish is something that goes against everything that Goku stands for. His iconic first transformation into his Super Saiyan form is something that everyone still remembers to this day, as well as how he claimed to be the answer for every living thing that cries out for peace. Angels have to abide by the decisions made by their Gods and must not meddle in mortal affairs, making this something that Goku simply can’t do as his main goal is to help the innocent.

This is very similar to Vegeta’s outlook as well. One of the biggest themes of the Granolah arc was redemption and moving on, something which Vegeta struggled to do for the longest time. For Ultra Ego, he had to shed the sins of his past, but he could not fully embrace this. Vegeta realized that he acted ruthlessly when he was younger and is trying his hardest to move on from that, so his indifference to destroying millions of lives would bring him back to being the callous and unfeeling man that he used to be.

Dragon Ball can be streamed on Crunchyroll and Funimation.
