One of the more interesting additions to Dragon Quest 3 Remake is the Monster Arena. Taking its inspiration from later games in the Dragon Quest series, the Monster Arena allows you to oversee fights between two teams of monsters. The first team, which you partially control, will be made up of certain monsters you’ll encounter in the world. The second team is controlled by the game. In this guide we’ll explain how to catch monsters for the arena in Dragon Quest 3 Remake.

Very early in Dragon Quest 3 Remake, you’ll encounter Monty, the NPC that you will send your monsters to after capturing them. This will occur just after passing through the portal at the Shrine of Promise. He will explain the very basics of capturing and recruiting monsters. It will still take a bit to reach Romaria, the location of the first Monster Arena. Later, you will find another in Ibis, south of the Pyramid dungeon. We will explain how the Monster Arena works in another guide.

Sometimes these monsters will be right out in the open, but many others they’ll be hidden. Sometimes they’ll only be available during certain times of the day. The best way to learn information about the monsters you can rescue in a specific location is by speaking to the various NPC inhabitants.

Several towns will feature NPCs that have seen monsters lurking about. In Reeve, you’ll find an NPC in the Tavern that has seen a monster outside the

Eastern window. They mention that it must be there to watch the sunset, because that’s the only time they can see it. This gives you both the location and the time of day the monster can be found.

Make sure to use Dragon Quest 3 Remake‘s time-changing mechanic at the Inn. This will allow you to switch the time of day.

At Level 10, the
Monster Wrangler
vocation will unlock the
Animal Instinct
ability. This will tell you if a catchable monster is in your vicinity, though not the exact location.

Many of the monsters you can rescue will simply let you approach them, but there are several scared monsters that require you to meet certain requirements before they can be recruited.

There will be times when you see a monster hiding behind a bush, or cowering behind crates, and the moment you approach, they flee. These monsters require you to have certain vocations in your party before you can recruit them.

For those players looking to recruit as many monsters as possible throughout the game, the best approach is to simply start the game with a Monster Wrangler in your party. Not only are they capable of rescuing any monster, they will also benefit greatly as your monster list grows. The wrangler has abilities that are enhanced as you rescue more and more monsters, so this is the best route to take if you simply want to avoid any problems with rescuing monsters.

The Thief vocation is also capable of rescuing scared monsters in Dragon Quest 3 Remake. For this, and many other helpful reasons, the Thief is a great vocation to consider adding to your starting party, or anytime thereafter.

For a less permanent solution, you can head to Patty’s Party Planning Place in Aliahan and create a level 1 Thief or Monster Wrangler for the sole purpose of rescuing monsters. Leave them at Patty’s, and add them to your party only when you need them.

Having a Thief or Monster Wrangler in your party will allow you to rescue all monsters that the protagonist cannot. To see the full list of monsters you’ve captured, return to the Monster Arena and speak with Monty.
