As players look through the list of new items in Dredge’s recent “The Iron Rig” DLC, they will notice a new item required for many: the Dark Canister. Many of the expansion’s best new items require this new crafting material, and it can be slightly tricky to determine just how to get them, especially early in your DLC playthrough. This guide will explain the process, noting exactly when and how you can get Dark Canisters in Dredge’s “The Iron Rig” DLC.

How to Get Dark Canisters in Dredge

Begin the Science Lab Questline:

The first step in collecting Dark Canister in Dredge is to complete the first part of “Strange Specimens,” the first Science Lab Quest. In the quest, the Scientist sends you to The Marrows to collect four sea creature samples. You should remember that several areas in The Marrows are now covered in black oil-like sludge. These samples can only be collected in and around this black liquid, and only with the upgraded Infused Rod you’ll get early in “The Iron Rig.” The four samples you must collect are:

Sample

Location/Description

Paddlefish

  • The Marrows
  • Coastal (Upgrade)
  • Rod Only
  • Any Time

Tullimonstrum

  • The Marrows
  • Coastal (Upgrade)
  • Rod Only
  • Any Time

Osteostracan

  • The Marrows
  • Shallow (Upgrade)
  • Rod Only
  • Any Time

Sea Cucumber

  • The Marrows
  • Crab
  • Pod (Drop in black goo)
  • Any Time.

Once you collect the specimens, return them to The Scientist. The next portion of the quest is where the Dark Canisters come into play. The Scientist will ask you to gather a sample of the black fluid that has spread over specific areas of the ocean, but to do this, players will have to unlock a specific device: the Siphon Trawler.

How to Unlock the Siphon Trawler:

The Siphon Trawler is part of the Factory’s Tier 2 equipment list. Luckily, the second tier of equipment is unlocked automatically upon completing the Scientist’s first fishing request. The Siphon Trawler is the first item on the Factory’s Tier 2 list, and will require the following items to unlock:

  • Crate x1, Basic Trawl Net x1, $50

If you already own a
Basic Trawl Net
, you can use that to create the Siphon Trawler. If you do not, most
Shipyards
sell them, as well as the Iron Rig’s
Undermarket
, once it is unlocked.

Once the Siphon Trawler is unlocked, you’ll want to install it on your ship. It will use up four net spaces, just like most Trawleing Nets.

Where to Find the Black Liquid:

The Black Liquid is still found in the Marrows, and will remain in the same location as you previously encountered when completing the first fishing for the Scientist. From the Iron Rig, simply use Manifest to return to the Marrows and then to the pools of black sludge.

When you get close to the sludge, open up your skill wheel and select the Trawler option. The Siphon Trawler will work the same as any other Trawler. When you reach the edge of the liquid sludge, press square/X to initiate the Siphon Trawler.

Watch out for the small creatures that hang out around the black liquid. They will jump up and into your ship, causing the black sludge

to take up a space in your storage in the form of a
Dark Splash
. If you have fish in your inventory, be careful keeping them together as they can cause fish to rot. They will be used for crafting later, so they are working saving in storage if you can.

With the Siphon Trawler running, you should see a small gauge on the bottom left side of the HUD. This will tell you the progress you’ve made in filling your first Dark Canister. Once the canister is full, there will be a notice that pops up quickly. When using the Siphon Trawler, keep these tips in mind:

  • Time moves faster when a Dark Canister is being filled, so pay attention to the clock as you work.
  • The panic gauge fills faster while in the black liquid, so make sure to keep an eye on the surrounding waters. Large monsters will approach incredibly fast. Have an exit plan in mind, just like you would in any other scenario.
  • The Siphon Trawler degrades like all items. The basic version lasts for one day. It only degrades while it is turned on, so you should have plenty of time to fill canisters between repairs. However, always check the state before heading out.

Once you collect your first Dark Canister, return to the Scientist and turn it in. This will move The Iron Rig questline along, and allow you to continue collecting Dark Canisters going forward. Any time you need a Dark Canister, which will be often, as they are in multiple unlock recipes, repeat the same process. As you progress the story, many more patches of Black Liquid will become available.

How to Craft Dark Canisters in Dredge

After players have completed the second fishing request for The Scientist, the massive sea creature will emerge from below the depths. This will mark the point that several upgrades become available, including the second tier upgrade to The Foundry. This upgrade costs one crate. Once upgraded, the Foundry will then be able to produce Dark Canisters using materials.

Dark Canisters can be crafted with:

  • Metal Scraps x2
  • Dark Splash x2
