Demeo developer Resolution Games has announced an officially-licensed Dungeons and Dragons VR game, partnering with Wizards of the Coast for its adaptation of the iconic franchise. The massively popular role-playing game has long been one of the most recognizable franchises in tabletop gaming, spawning a media empire that ranges from novels and video games to web series and more. The game has been particularly prominent in recent years, following the success of spinoffs like Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves and Baldur’s Gate 3.
While Resolution Games has never made an official Dungeons and Dragons game, the developer is already very familiar with its style of gameplay. The Demeo franchise takes plenty of inspiration from the beloved role-playing game, featuring turn-based combat and an Action Point system similar to D&D‘s Action and Bonus Actions. Demeo also places a heavy focus on virtual reality, releasing for both Oculus Quest and PS VR2 with a VR tabletop environment. Now, Resolution Games is teaming up with Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro for an official Dungeons and Dragons VR game.
Demeo VR is a Virtual Reality Tabletop Game Coming to PlayStation VR2
Developer Resolution Games announces that its cross-platform PC and VR tabletop RPG Demeo is on its way to PlayStation 5 and the upcoming PSVR2.
As reported by IGN, Resolution Games officially announced its newfound partnership with Wizards of the Coast, working together to develop the first virtual reality Dungeons and Dragons game. Within the announcement, Resolution CEO Tommy Palm praised Dungeons and Dragons as “one of the richest fantasy worlds ever created.” Wizards of the Coast’s Eugene Evans had equally glowing reviews of Resolution Games, calling the developer an “ideal partner” to bring Dungeons and Dragons to life in virtual reality. No details or release window were revealed at the time, with Resolution Games promising more information to come later.
While the new collaboration with Resolution Games will be Dungeons and Dragons‘ first official VR game, the franchise already has a rich history with video games. The Dungeons and Dragons franchise has seen consistent video game releases since as early as 1988, with Wizards of the Coast typically partnering with other developers for spinoffs like Neverwinter Nights and Dark Alliance. Larian Studios’ Baldur’s Gate 3 saw universal acclaim following its release last year, winning the coveted “Game of the Year” award at the 2023 Game Awards.
With a Dungeons and Dragons VR game in the works, Wizards of the Coast is gearing up for a major change coming to the franchise’s core tabletop game. The developer is planning to release One D&D later this year as the newest major revision to Dungeons and Dragons‘ rules. Wizards of the Coast has already rolled out multiple playtests, showing off the changes to major mechanics like Dungeons and Dragons‘ Feat system, playable classes, and plenty more. Between Demeo’s collaboration with Dungeons and Dragons and the impending release of One D&D, plenty of new ways to play the iconic game are on the way.
