Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero features a jaw-dropping 181 playable characters in its base roster, and unlocking them all is no small task. Thankfully, developers seemingly anticipated the intimidation that players are likely to feel. Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero features a few methods to unlock every character in the game, and players should waste no time finding the best route to take.
Purchasing characters with Zeni will likely be the primary way that players expand their roster, although it isn’t necessarily the most efficient. In fact, there are many characters that can be obtained directly through Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero‘s Episode Battle mode and other single-player content. Regardless, players should brush up on each of these routes if they want to unlock the full roster.

The Basics of Unlocking Characters in Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero
There are a few rules of thumb to keep in mind when tackling this massive undertaking. First and foremost, unlocking a character’s base form will give players all of their subsequent transformations. This remains true whether a character is bought with Zeni or unlocked by other means. Naturally, this turns DB characters with multiple transformations into surefire ways to expand one’s roster.
There are currently a few characters, such as Janemba, who can only be unlocked through the shop. This is thankfully few and far between, and players should generally aim for more cost-effective means. After all, purchasing every single character in the game would cost more than 3,000,000 Zeni. For reference, Super Shenron’s wishes can grant the single largest sum of Zeni in the game, and he only provides 1,000,000. Regardless, Zeni spent on characters is refunded if players complete their other unlock conditions.
These conditions come in all shapes and sizes, but players can mostly focus on Episode Battles, Bonus Battles, and Tournaments. Players can unlock several characters in Episode Battles, such as Broly (Super), Videl, and Majin Vegeta. Bonus Battles host plenty of characters as well, such as Gohan (Future) and Caulifla. Tournaments hold their own thanks to standouts such as Super Gogeta (Z) and Goku (Teen). Zen-Oh’s Orders bring up the rear, and although it isn’t the fastest way to unlock characters, they can allow players to unlock powerhouses such as Gogeta (GT) and Baby Vegeta (GT).
This paves the way for the final rule of thumb, which is undoubtedly the most important. Every playable character in Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero can be purchased with Zeni by the time players hit level 20. Though getting this far in progression may seem like a lot of grinding, it may become necessary for players who aren’t able to fulfill other late-game requirements.
Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero’s Most Rare Characters Are Some of Its Most Powerful
There are two characters in Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero who are undoubtedly the most difficult to obtain. Goku Black and Fused Zamasu are intentionally designed to be some of the last characters players unlock, likely thanks to their immense power. In a fun reference to Dragon Ball Super, it is possible to obtain one of them by wishing for Super Shenron to give you more characters.
One could simply collect the Super Dragon Balls twice, but this isn’t nearly as simple as it sounds. While most other characters become available for purchase at earlier Player Levels, Goku Black and Fused Zamasu can only be obtained through the shop at Level 20. Because of this unfortunate fact, it is most efficient to wish for one of them from Super Shenron, and then grind to the top in order to eventually buy the other with Zeni.
Bonus Unlockable Characters in Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero
Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero is already infamous for its unbalanced hierarchy of power. Fortunately for some players, many of the game’s most powerful fighters can be obtained instantly if they pre-ordered Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero‘s Season Pass, or other premium versions of the game. This includes the versions of Broly from both Dragon Ball Super and his original movie appearance. Also included is Dragon Ball Super‘s rendition of Gogeta, as well as Goku and Vegeta’s Super incarnations.
Although these characters can still be unlocked later by players who didn’t pre-order, this isn’t the case for one fighter. Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero added Dragon Ball Daima content ahead of the anime’s release by including Goku (Mini) as a pre-order bonus. The game’s roster may be huge now, but it’s only going to continue expanding. More DLC characters are confirmed to be on the way, although their counterparts make it reasonable to assume that they will be unlocked automatically.
