Highlights

  • The Ghost of Tsushima PC port reached 72,576 concurrent players on May 18.
  • By this metric, Ghost of Tsushima is PlayStation’s second-biggest first-party PC launch ever.
  • The figure is even more impressive in light of the fact that Sony decided to delist Ghost of Tsushima in 180 regions ahead of its release.

The Ghost of Tsushima PC version surpassed 72,000 concurrent players on May 18. Only a single first-party PlayStation game ever had a bigger PC launch, and that one may yet be outperformed by Ghost of Tsushima.

The long-awaited PC port of the 2020 samurai ARPG had at last reached Steam on May 16. Reviewers and players alike have praised the Ghost of Tsushima PC version for a variety of reasons, including its overall level of polish and performance. The game peaked at 57,381 concurrent players on launch day, then improved that record to 61,453 people the following day.

Ghost of Tsushima Is Within Arm’s Reach of God of War’s PC Player Record

The action RPG managed to build on that momentum throughout Saturday, with SteamDB data revealing it had peaked at 72,576 concurrent Steam players in the early afternoon hours ET on May 18. Only God of War had a marginally stronger PC launch out of all the first-party PlayStation games that reached Steam to date, recording 73,529 concurrent players three days following its mid-January 2022 release. Ghost of Tsushima‘s strong Steam debut may still see it surpass that figure, not least because the weekend is only halfway done.

What makes this early momentum even more impressive is that Ghost of Tsushima has been delisted from Steam in 180 regions ahead of its release. Had that not happened, the game likely would have already seized the title of the biggest-ever first-party PlayStation PC launch ever. The move itself is presumed to have been motivated by the fact that Ghost of Tsushima requires a PlayStation Network account for its Legends multiplayer mode. Namely, PSN isn’t available in the majority of the delisted countries. While Sony was accepting pre-orders with no such restrictions for a while, Steam has already started auto-refunding such advanced purchases from consumers who were affected by the mass delisting.

Between the recently released ports of Ghost of Tsushima and Horizon Forbidden West, not to mention the stratospheric success of Helldivers 2, 2024 has already been a huge year for Sony’s PC publishing push, and it’s not even halfway done. The company still has a few current-generation first-party games that are yet to make their way to PC, including God of War Ragnarok, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Gran Turismo 7, and the Demon’s Souls remake. Given how Sony recently vowed to get even more “aggressive” with its first-party PC releases, at least some of those ports may still reach Steam by year’s end, despite none of them being officially announced just yet.
