Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto series is one of the all-time most recognized and profitable properties across any medium. Its meteoric rise to success since Grand Theft Auto 3 impacted the gaming space as a whole has sustained the franchise’s massive popularity for decades. With each subsequent release, Rockstar painstakingly strives to impress with a bigger and bolder design. While Grand Theft Auto 6 is confirmed to be in development, Rockstar is infamous for long development cycles, and it will likely still be a while before GTA 6 sees the light of day as of now.

Of course, that hasn’t stopped Grand Theft Auto 6 rumors, leaks, and speculation from spreading ever since it was announced. Without much official comment from the developer itself though, fans are left to wonder about the shape of the next iteration, and what aspects will be added, changed, or removed.

Whatever direction GTA 6 takes, there is one inclusion that has always been part of its core identity and gameplay experience, and that Rockstar should take steps to continue in the tradition and improve upon—cheat codes.

Grand Theft Auto 6 Should Include Fan-Favorite Cheat Codes

Cheat Codes In Grand Theft Auto 4

A longstanding mechanic in the franchise is the cheat codes in Grand Theft Auto. Activating these with specific and sometimes complicated strings of controller inputs created the ability to elevate the carnage players could enact upon the game world to even greater heights. The various cheats like invincibility and infinite ammo are deeply ingrained in the spirit of the freewheeling chaotic feel that the GTA games provide.

Other games had these to be sure, but GTA stood out among them for the sheer joy and destructive spectacle players could cause. Along with many other elements of the series, GTA’s cheat codes are in its design DNA. They are an expected component of each game, and Rockstar usually complies accordingly.

In Grand Theft Auto 4, cheat codes were modernized in a clever way. Players could bring up GTA 4 protagonist Niko Bellic’s cell phone and enter essentially secret phone numbers related to various cheat commands. Turning them on via this in-universe method added a layer of immersion, and allowed even greater freedom to experiment with them. GTA 4 was at the time an early next-gen title. Its incredibly detailed version of Liberty City was more graphically realistic than previously seen before. Witnessing the streets filling with increasing amounts of law enforcement as explosions rocked the skyline and players walked through it all unscathed was a sight to behold.

Grand Theft Auto 6 Has to Have More Cheat Codes

While firm information about Grand Theft Auto 6‘s release date and other news has been sporadic at best, it is a good bet that cheat codes will make a return in some form. How they will be handled, though, is still an unknown factor, and Rockstar has a big reputation to live up to in terms of providing players with a wide range of cool and entertaining cheats to create their own enjoyably anarchic fun. They need to both feel as great as the previous versions, but also push them forward with some surprises and unique twists.

One of the more notable details that has come from the leaks and rumor mill surrounding it, is that Grand Theft Auto 6 will feature two protagonists. This opens up some interesting options for how Rockstar might tackle inserting cheat codes in it. Perhaps each character could have a different set of cheats specific to them. They might share a few general ones between them, but then require playing as one or the other for those that are relevant to that character in some way.

GTA 6 stands to benefit from Rockstar’s history of one-upping itself in each entry, and include an extensive suite of excellent cheat codes, for players to enjoy in the next mainline title.
