Recent speculation from tech experts have suggested that the highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto 6 might not find its way to the Nintendo Switch 2 due to technical limitations. Just like the constraints that prevented the Nintendo Switch from hosting certain kinds of titles, it is expected that the Switch 2, despite being more powerful, will also face challenges running technologically advanced titles like Grand Theft Auto 6.
Switch 2 details have yet to be confirmed, but the upcoming new Nintendo console is expected to hit the market in 2024. Digital Foundry’s experts have compared the technical aspects showcased in the GTA 6 trailer with what is expected from the potential Nintendo Switch 2. Unfortunately for Nintendo’s users, the analysis raises doubts about its ability to run GTA 6 smoothly. Richard Leadbetter, Digital Foundry’s founder, acknowledged the anticipated improvements in Switch 2 but emphasized that the technical demands of GTA 6 make it unlikely, stating, “I’d love to say it would happen. I don’t think it will, realistically.”
Digital Foundry contributor Oliver Mackenzie echoed these sentiments, stating that the Switch 2’s power might fall short of supporting the intricate ray-tracing technology showcased in the GTA 6 trailer. Moreover, Mackenzie emphasized that the Switch 2 is expected to bring significant advancements but might not align with the graphical demands set by Rockstar. “The Switch 2 is not going to be powerful enough to run all that ray tracing,” he said.
Adding weight to this speculation is the historical absence of GTA 5 on the original Nintendo Switch, even after a decade since its launch. If the predictions hold true, the potential exclusion of GTA 6 from the Nintendo Switch 2’s library could be a significant blow to fans of the portable console.
