The fight for galactic freedom in Helldivers 2 grows harder and more exciting as Arrowhead Game Studios continues to put effort into the game’s growth. Recent updates have seen everything from equipment to enemies receiving various additions and boosts in strength, allowing for an experience that most other massive multiplayer third-person shooters have yet to provide. As good as the new changes may be, there are still concerns regarding future content, particularly about the potential addition of the Illuminate faction in Helldivers 2. Should Arrowhead Game Studios ever decide to add the highly advanced and sophisticated race to the game, the developer must focus on one aspect to help ensure it stands out.

Because of events such as the sudden appearance of a black hole after the destruction of Meridia, there is reason to believe that the Illuminate faction is inching closer to making an appearance in Helldivers 2. While the alien race’s appearance isn’t guaranteed, there are signs which suggest that it eventually will. Should the Illuminate ever make its way into the game, Arrowhead Game Studios has to ensure that the quality and diversity of the faction’s missions are better or at least on par with that of the Terminids and the Automatons. How they’ll be tackled will leave a lasting impression on players, and whether the outcome is good or bad will depend entirely on execution.

Mission Types That Can Allow The Illuminate Faction to Stand Out

The missions and side objectives for Automatons and Terminids are diverse enough that completing any of them is an engaging and exciting experience, regardless of the number of times they’re done. If the Illuminate ever appears in Helldivers 2, it should have the same quality of assignments as the other enemy factions. Given the unique characteristics of the sophisticated aliens, Arrowhead Game Studios have a lot of creative opportunities for how they’ll appear and how players will stop them, such as:

  • Having the Illuminate appear from Meridia’s black hole and threaten other planets to follow in the same footsteps as Meridia’s destruction, prompting missions to appear on the threatened planets
  • An objective that involves destroying the Illuminate machinery that will turn the planets into black holes, with each one being heavily defended by the faction’s units to emphasize the threat they pose
  • A side objective wherein players are tasked with taking a piece of Illuminate technology for study, allowing for a better understanding of how the aliens work and possibly the reason for their appearance

Adding the Illuminate can help expand the game in more ways than one, as it has a lot of potential for interesting and engaging content. With the right ideas and execution, the faction should help propel Helldivers 2 to even greater heights within the multiplayer third-person shooter genre.

What Adding the Illuminate Faction Can Do for Helldivers 2

The recent changes and additions would make now a good time to introduce a new faction into Helldivers 2, making the Illuminate a heavy contender for what’s to come. Other than more unique missions, they can also provide other new types of content. The qualities of the Illuminate allow for a Warbond themed around them, potentially introducing new equipment designed around getting through the shields and lightning-based weapons the race is known for. Their introduction can even be used as a set-up for another faction to join the fray, as the technology and the destructive motives of the enemies from the previous Helldivers could easily be used as the catalyst for another threat to appear.

With leaks of the Illuminate faction prematurely appearing within Helldivers 2, it’s nearly guaranteed that the alien threat will make its way to the game eventually. Still, if it is exactly what players expect, then their reappearance must be handled grandly, making it all the more important that they are introduced with the right missions. So long as Arrowhead Game Studios understands what type of things players would want to do to stop the Illuminate, their addition to the game will likely be well-received.
