  • Avalanche Software may already be working on a Hogwarts Legacy sequel.
  • Some newly emerged job listings suggest that the company’s next project will be an open-world action RPG with magic-based combat.
  • Avalanche’s next game ostensibly won’t hit the market before the late 2020s.

Avalanche Software may already be working on a Hogwarts Legacy sequel. That’s suggested by a recently published Avalanche Software job listing spotted by Game Rant.

Hogwarts Legacy recently made history as the best-selling video game of 2023 in the U.S. In doing so, it broke 14 years of sales dominance shared between Call of Duty and Rockstar titles. While making a sequel to such an immensely successful release seems like an obvious move for Warner Bros., the company hasn’t yet officially confirmed that it plans to do so.

But WB Games subsidiary Avalanche Software may already be working on a Hogwarts Legacy sequel, as one recently publicized job listing from the company appears to be hinting at the existence of such a project. The posting, reviewed by Game Rant, describes an opening for a Producer on an undisclosed project, adding that the ideal candidate would have experience working on open-world RPGs or “action/magical combat games.” While the listing doesn’t outright state that the advertised role is related to a new game, it describes the opening as being part of “what’s next” for Avalanche Software after Hogwarts Legacy.

Hogwarts Legacy 2 Could Have Live-Service Elements, Job Listing Suggests

The Salt Lake City-based studio recently published a similar job ad, which advertises a newly opened position of Senior Producer. That particular posting directly states that Avalanche Software is hiring for “a new open world, action RPG.” It also mentions that the unannounced title is planned to have a “live ops” phase post-release, suggesting that the Hogwarts Legacy sequel could be a live-service game. WB Games has been quite vocal about doubling down on its live-service push in recent times, seemingly unfazed by the failure of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League.

Known leaker MyTimetoShineHello previously claimed that Hogwarts Legacy 2 was already greenlit no later than September 2023. Several subsequent job listings have also pointed to the existence of such a project in early 2024. While these newly advertised job openings could theoretically be connected to a game unrelated to Hogwarts Legacy, that seems somewhat unlikely, not least because Avalanche Software has long been a one-project studio. According to publicly available LinkedIn data, the company currently has around 250 employees, which is on the lower end for a modern AAA developer, making it even less likely that Avalanche could be pursuing another game in parallel with a Hogwarts Legacy follow-up.

Given how AAA development cycles have been steadily getting longer in recent times, a potential Hogwarts Legacy sequel seems unlikely to hit the market prior to the late 2020s. Since the tenth console generation is already expected to be out around that time, that would likely make Hogwarts Legacy 2 another cross-gen release.
