House of the Dragon Season 2 was met by division from fans over a lackluster finale. With Season 3 approaching the start of production, one of the lead cast members has hinted at what their character is in for in the next chapter.

House of the Dragon is a prequel to HBO’s blockbuster series Game of Thrones. It’s based on author George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood which chronicles the history of the Targaryen family, the reigning rulers of Westeros. House of the Dragon covers the period in the family’s history known as the “Dance of the Dragons,” which sees two sides of the Targaryen family tree go to war for the succession of the crown. On one side is Rhaenyra Targaryen, the firstborn daughter of King Viserys, and on the other side is his wife, Alicent Hightower, who tries to bypass Rhaenyra’s claim to the throne with her son, Aegon. Season 2 of House of the Dragon saw each faction rally their sides and prepare for war.

House of the Dragon Is a Great Example of Several Modern TV Problems

House of the Dragon’s second season was both excellent and irritating, but many of the show’s big problems are frustratingly common.

What’s In Store For Rhaenyra In House of the Dragon Season 3?

Emma D’Arcy who stars as Rhaenyra Targaryen in House of the Dragon, recently received their second Golden Globe nomination for the role. Speaking to Variety following the nomination, D’Arcy hinted at where Rhaenyra’s journey will go in Season 3. “Rhaenyra is a character who’s finally coming into her power,” D’Arcy said, adding that they think it will be “quite a different challenge” to embody that confidence.

“And in terms of Rhaenyra, I’m waiting with bated breath to read exactly what she’s going to be doing. It’s exciting leaving the second season in such a moment of change, both sort of personal and political change. Rhaenyra is a character who’s finally coming into her power. I think it’s taken two seasons for her to sort of come into herself. And so I think it’ll be quite a different challenge to start to wear that confidence.”

What Happened to Rhaenyra in Season 2 of House of the Dragon?

Rhaenyra struggled to maintain her power in Season 2 as she attempted to secure the loyalty of the bannermen to her side for war. She faced mistrust within her own house after her husband, Daemon, fled to Harrenhal to recruit allies. In the season finale of House of the Dragon, Rhaenyra traveled to Harrenhal and finally reclaimed Daemon’s loyalty. She also rejected a peace offer from Alicent Hightower, mobilizing things for war to break out in Season 3.

Season 3 of House of the Dragon is expected to film in 2025, with a release date likely in the following year. The new season will likely cover major events from the chapters of Fire & Blood, including the siege of King’s Landing and a climactic confrontation between Daemon and Aemond. After a season that fans found disappointing, House of the Dragon will need to work hard to bring some more action in Season 3. Even George R.R. Martin has voiced his opinions on the changes made from the book to the TV series, meaning hopefully there is room for the series to correct course in Season 3.
