Highlights

  • Destiny 2 remains popular due to constant content updates, including exciting crossovers with other popular gaming IPs.
  • Destiny 2 has successfully collaborated with franchises like Assassin’s Creed, PlayStation, The Witcher, and Mass Effect.
  • Halo Infinite could benefit from taking a page out of Destiny 2’s playbook by introducing crossovers with other gaming franchises.

It’s been a pretty interesting decade for Bungie. After leaving the Halo franchise behind in 2010 with the incredible swansong that was Halo Reach, Bungie set about creating its first new IP in almost a decade, and that resulted in the studio’s newest sci-fi blockbuster hit, Destiny. Though the original Destiny had its flaws, its universe, character and enemy designs, and general gameplay all showed some real potential, potential that was fully realized with the launch of Destiny 2 in 2017.

While Destiny 2 has had its own fair share of ups and downs over the last seven years, the game has managed to remain incredibly popular throughout it all, and it’s in no small part due to the game’s constant content updates. Though Destiny 2‘s paid DLC expansions are what really turn heads, the smaller, more regular content drops go a long way in keeping the community active, especially when those content drops include some exciting new cosmetics, and especially when those cosmetics cross over with another popular gaming IP, something that Halo Infinite may want to learn from.

Every ‘Destiny Killer’ that Destiny 2 Has Outlived So Far

Despite several live-service and looter-shooter games being anticipated to ‘kill’ Destiny 2, none have been able to finish the job so far.

Halo Infinite Should Borrow a Page Out of Destiny 2’s Playbook

While Destiny 2 was happy for its own characters to come over to games like Fortnite and Fall Guys, it would take until December 2022 for Destiny 2 to host its own crossover event. The first proper Destiny 2 crossover saw some Assassin’s Creed-themed cosmetics come to the sci-fi shooter, while some Destiny-themed armor sets went over to Assassin’s Creed Valhalla.

Clearly a successful first venture, Destiny 2 has continued to collaborate with an impressive number of popular gaming franchises over the last few years. One of Destiny 2‘s biggest crossovers occurred in May 2023, when a slew of PlayStation first-party cosmetics came to the game, including armor sets based on Horizon, God of War, and Ghost of Tsushima, as well as a Ghost shell themed around The Last of Us.

One of the most intriguing Destiny 2 crossovers happened just a few months before its Assassin’s Creed collaboration, and technically wasn’t even an official crossover at all. Released as part of Bungie’s 30th anniversary celebration, Destiny 2 received a number of weapons based on the Halo franchise, converting some of Destiny‘s best-known weapons into those that wouldn’t look too out of place in the Master Chief’s hands, including a BrX-55 Battler Pulse Rifle, the Half-Truths Sword, and an exotic handgun based on Halo‘s iconic Magnum pistol.

Halo Infinite Should Experiment With Its Own Crossovers

Much like Destiny 2 before its December 2022 Assassin’s Creed collab, Halo Infinite has technically crossed over with a few big gaming properties, though it’s always been in other games, ranging from Fortnite to Microsoft Flight Simulator to Rainbow Six Siege. The only real crossover armor sets in Halo Infinite have come from other projects in the same universe, such as the recent Halo Wars and Halo Paramount+ cosmetics.

Going forward, it might be fun to see Halo Infinite take a page out of Destiny 2‘s playbook and start bringing in a few cosmetics based on other popular video game franchises. This should start with a collaboration with Bungie itself, bringing some Destiny-themed cosmetics to Halo Infinite in a cathartic full-circle moment. From there, the world is Halo Infinite‘s oyster.
