While Toji Fushiguro is a favorite among those in the Jujutsu Kaisen fandom, not even his most avid fans can say that he’s a good father to his son, Megumi Fushiguro. Despite this, his most impactful decision regarding Megumi’s life was one that turned out for the best.
The decision to entrust Megumi to Satoru Gojo may look strange on the surface to anyone who has watched Jujutsu Kaisen. Gojo was the one to kill Toji, after all. However, Gojo becoming Megumi’s guardian and snatching him from the Zenin clan’s clutches was perhaps one of the best things that could have happened to the young boy. But how did Toji come to make the impulsive choice to entrust his son to a stranger who evaporated half of his torso from existence?
Toji and the Zenin Clan
Toji Zenin was one-of-a-kind from the moment he was born. Toji came into the world with no cursed energy, thanks to a heavenly restriction that took away his cursed energy in exchange for incredible physical prowess. Due to the fact he had zero cursed energy, he was ostracized and neglected by his family, often receiving abuse from members of the family as well. As a result, Toji developed a deep disdain for the Zenin clan as he grew up. His hatred for his family also led to hatred in general of the jujutsu world and its sorcerers.
This disgust for his family and the world around him led him to become the cold and calculated “Sorcerer Killer.” Since Toji had no cursed energy to speak of, it made him the perfect assassin because he was able to sneak past any barrier and any form of cursed energy detection. His invisible nature made him a ghost, and his incredible physical ability made him the perfect weapon. Combining these two facts, Toji had the ability to murder any sorcerer of any skill level in the world, making him highly sought after in the jujutsu underworld.
However, he met a woman along the way that would change him for the better. Toji would desert his clan and marry this woman, taking her last name of Fushiguro. He and the woman had Megumi, who he named himself. During this time, he also abandoned his work as an assassin.
Assassinating the Star Plasma Vessel
A short time after Megumi was born, his wife passed away from unknown causes. Almost immediately after her passing, he became the cold-hearted man he was before he met her. He set up a sale that would give Megumi to the Zenin clan for a certain sum, depending on his cursed technique, and got back to work again as the most feared assassin in the jujutsu world.
Some time had passed before the Time Vessel Association contracted Toji to kill the Star Plasma Vessel, Riko Amenai, turning his route right into Gojo’s path. Toji had the perfect plan by placing a bounty with a time limit on Amenai’s head. This strategy brought on an onslaught of bounty hunters looking for profit, forcing Gojo to constantly use his technique, which tires him if used for long stretches of time. The plan worked exactly as he had hoped, and he completed his mission of assassinating Amenai, killing Gojo along the way.
That was the case until he saw a revived and frenzied Gojo before him as he was walking off with the reward for his completed mission. Being filled with pride and anger at the society and family that shunned him, he fought the newly awakened Gojo despite his instincts telling him that there was clearly something afoot. His gut was right, and he paid the consequences, getting half his body eviscerated by a hollow purple.
When Gojo asked him if he had any last words, Toji suddenly remembered his son. At that moment, he told him that Megumi was to be sold to the Zenin clan and to do whatever he wanted with that information. Toji knew very well that Gojo was the only one with the power to stop that sale from happening because he was simply way too strong for them to do anything about it. In the few seconds he had before passing on, everything became clear for Toji. He realized he didn’t want his son to grow up in the same environment he did, and he definitely wanted to get one last hit off on the Zenin clan, who rejected him his whole life.
