Gojo was always destined for greatness and, as the strongest sorcerer, he was also destined to fight some of the strongest enemies in the story. Of course, this eventually led to him fighting against Sukuna, which is a battle that unfolded quite recently in the story. At the end of this battle, Gojo ended up losing, and gave up his life as well. However, fans have not given up hope on Gojo just yet and it is a big possibility that he will end up returning to the story sooner rather than later.

Gojo’s Role In Jujutsu Kaisen

For the vast majority of the story, Gojo’s role in JJK is to be a deterrent. Gojo was the biggest deterrent for the strongest curses and curse users around and kept them in check. His strength was so overwhelmingly great that none of them even dared to raise a finger while he was around. It was made quite clear in the story that from the moment that Gojo was born, the balance of the world shifted entirely. Everyone who once engaged in criminal activities freely decided to go back into the shadows and work from there. Gojo’s presence alone was enough to change the entire world and that in itself is proof of his greatness as a character.

Of course, as a deterrent, if Gojo were always able to maintain peace around, then, the story would never really work properly. Gojo had to be removed from the story in one way or another in order for the plot to progress. This was seen in the story by various methods. For instance, when the event with Kyoto High School was going on, a barrier was erected that prevented Gojo from entering, and thus, the tension and intensity of the arc went through the roof. In the end, Gojo managed to rescue everyone, however, for the vast majority of this fight, he was cut out. Gojo remained as a deterrent, however, that is where the bigger part of the overarching story came into play, which was the sealing of Gojo Satoru.

In Shibuya, Gojo was successfully sealed by Kenjaku and, once again, the major deterrent was removed from the plot surgically in order for the story to progress. Shibuya was fascinating for the fans to witness and bore dire consequences for the main characters. All this was only made possible by Gojo being removed from the plot entirely. Similarly, Gojo was then brought back in the Culling Game Arc and this time around, he went face to face with the strongest sorcerer of all time, Sukuna. Fans already know that Sukuna is tremendously dangerous and both of these characters were immensely overpowered right from the get-go.

Once again Gojo played his part in this fight, however, had Gojo simply won against Sukuna, the story would not really have progressed any further and would have ended just there. Characters such as Yuji and the other next generation guys would have been left as unfinished products with not much to do in their own story arcs and, as a result, removing Gojo was important for the story. This time around, Gojo was simply killed off, although the manner in which he was killed off was somewhat senseless. Regardless, it certainly did happen and Gojo’s role as a deterrent was changed once again by completely removing him from the story in order for the stakes and the intensity to rise through the roof.

Why Gojo’s Return Is Needed

It is quite clear for the fans to see that Gojo needed to be removed from the story for the plot to progress. No matter what, Gojo had to be cast aside for the main characters to progress further and this was incredibly important.

Jujutsu Kaisen: Yuji Awakens His Cursed Technique

Yuji might just have unlocked his cursed technique in his fight against Sukuna in JJK.

For instance, the story would not have been able to progress at all during the Goodwill Event if Gojo had been around. Similarly, Shibuya would likely have concluded within a minute or two at best if Gojo was around and, in the Culling Game, had Gojo successfully defeated Sukuna, then the story would simply have ended right there. As sad as it may sound, Gojo was destined to die or be incapacitated from the very beginning.

As the strongest, he couldn’t have been around or the plot would not move forward. However, that doesn’t mean that Gojo cannot return to the story. As great a deterrent as he is, Gojo isn’t simply just that to the story. Gojo has his own goals and dreams and there are many motivations that drive him forward as well. Gojo is a deeply complex character who, although naive on the surface at some times, actually bears quite a lot of depth to him. Gojo is very important in many ways and fans are absolutely certain that there are plot points surrounding this character that need to be wrapped up properly.

For one, Gojo has his own character arc where he wishes to change the world. Gojo makes it very clear in the very first segment of the story that he wishes to change the Jujutsu Society as it is. He can uproot it if he so wishes using his strength alone, however, he wishes to install a new order with stability and something sustainable as well. As a result, Gojo became a teacher and aimed at raising students who would, one day, go on to change the world and the society as it is. Of course, while the students are an important driving factor in his plan, Gojo himself has to witness this future, and it will be his victory at the end of the day. Gojo deserves to be alive to see his students change the world and aid them in doing so himself.

Gojo’s Unfinished Business

Gojo

While Gojo still has dreams that he has to accomplish, there is also unfinished business on the part of this character that needs to be taken care of. For instance, Gojo wanted to give Geto a proper burial and that is something that is still on the cards. As Geto was decapitated by Yuta, fans know that Kenjaku cannot utilize his body again. This means that Geto’s body can now receive a proper burial and Gojo absolutely needs to be around for that. Furthermore, Gojo also wanted to wrap up the story arc pertaining to Megumi. While he does mention that Shoko can do that for him, she is a completely irrelevant character with no ties to Megumi whatsoever. She can certainly tell him, but the weight it would hold wouldn’t even be remotely similar.

There are many things for Gojo to tackle in the story and, once the students reach incredible levels of power, Gojo being stronger will no longer be relevant in terms of being a problem when driving the plot forward. This would mean that Gojo’s return will not stop the story in any way in the future. Of course, the author can simply choose to keep him dead, however, Gojo can very well make a return and there have already been hints for it in the story. Whether that happens or not remains to be seen.

Jujutsu Kaisen is available to read via Viz Media. The series can be read by the fans officially and for free on the Shonen Jump and the Manga Plus app. The release date for the next chapter of JJK, Jujutsu Kaisen chapter 248, is set to be January 21, 2024.
