  • Bungie’s decision to end the saga with a Raid instead of the campaign aims to create a more impactful and satisfying conclusion.

Destiny 2 is fast approaching its most important release yet in the form of The Final Shape, an expansion that is making massive changes to Bungie’s looter-shooter and is marking the end of the 10-year-spanning Light and Darkness saga. There is a lot riding on The Final Shape’s shoulders, and the confrontation with The Witness has to live up to the expectations, possibly even go above and beyond. Destiny 2‘s The Final Shape will drop on June 4, and it will include a bunch of new features, such as the highly-anticipated Prismatic subclasses and Exotic class items, and while players will be able to access the campaign and most of its content on day one, it will be June 7 to matter the most.

Destiny 2‘s Pale Heart will include secrets and new areas that unlock over time, but fans will be able to immediately jump in and have a meeting with the legendary Cayde-6. There will most likely be changes to the Pale Heart and The Final Shape’s content offerings very soon though, as the expansion’s accompanying Raid is where the story ends and new ones begin. For this reason, June 7 will mark the end of an era, and it will be the final showdown with The Witness.

Why June 7 Will Be a Huge Day For Destiny 2

Destiny 2’s Final Shape Raid Releases on June 7, Ending The 10-Year Saga

Even before Bungie announced that Destiny 2‘s Final Shape Raid was going to launch on June 7 and that it would be where Guardians make their stand against The Witness, it was clear that the campaign couldn’t be the explosive finale Bungie has been hyping up. The Raid was the perfect candidate for this story to end, even if it won’t be something everyone will be able to access and experience. While June 4 will go down as the release of The Final Shape, it will be June 7 to be remembered as the day the saga truly ends.

It’s worth noting that Destiny 2 Raids are experienced by a very small percentage of players. This, combined with The Final Shape’s Raid releasing just three days into the expansion, was cause for concern among fans worrying it wouldn’t be ideal to end the saga like that.

June 7 may be too soon for the Raid, on one hand, as players will only have three days to rush through The Final Shape and increase their Power Level to the cap. On the other hand, Bungie said it’s prepared for this and it made the Power Level cap more manageable. Destiny 2‘s endgame content is far from the most accessible in the industry, but it’s tradition for Bungie to hold a World First race on Raid release dates, so Guardians not playing the Raid themselves will still be able to experience the battle against The Witness on stream.

June 7 Will Mark The End of Destiny 2’s Biggest Era

Destiny 2’s The Final Shape Campaign Couldn’t End With The Witness Fight

As sad as it may be for players who don’t run Raids a lot, having Destiny 2‘s 10-year saga end during the campaign would have been anti-climatic, especially considering there would have been a whole new final boss for The Final Shape’s Raid, instead. Thus, having The Witness as The Final Shape’s Raid boss makes a lot of sense, even from a story standpoint. For example, the story in The Final Shape campaign could involve Guardians losing to The Witness, but not giving up just yet.

As The Witness launches their final offensive or as their plan is about to come to fruition, Guardians start disrupting it by going through the various Raid encounters on June 7. Likewise, Destiny 2‘s new release date for The Final Shape needed to closely match that of the Raid, as ending the campaign on a cliffhanger only for Guardians to wait a couple of weeks would have taken that spark away. What follows is that June 4 will be an appetizer and June 7 will be the main course.
