Sean Murray and Hello Games have unveiled Light No Fire, their next game after No Man’s Sky, pitched as a true open-world title set on a fantasy planet with multiplayer components. While No Man’s Sky was infamous for failing to deliver on the promises made during its marketing campaign, the game has since gone on to become one of the best redemption stories in modern video game history, sharing the podium with games such as Final Fantasy 14, Fallout 76, and Cyberpunk 2077.

Over the course of No Man’s Sky‘s many updates, the developers at Hello Games learned important lessons, as the once-maligned title blossomed into an immersive space exploration sim. Entering the development of Light No Fire, its 12-person team is now better prepared to tackle the ambitious scope of creating an Earth-sized fantasy world, with varied environments, base-building, and even dragon riding. Whereas No Man’s Sky placed emphasis on exploring a vast galaxy, the vision of Light No Fire is about combining the “depth of a roleplaying game with the freedom of a survival sandbox”.

No Man’s Sky Is Having One of Its Best Months Ever

Hello Games founder Sean Murray announces that No Man’s Sky is having its best month in years, over seven years after it first launched.

Light No Fire Is A Fantasy Take On No Man’s Sky Made By Hello Games

The announcement trailer for Light No Fire made its debut at The Game Awards 2023, shortly after Cyberpunk 2077 won the award for Best Ongoing Game, a culmination of CD Projekt Red’s efforts in retooling the title after its disastrous launch. While No Man’s Sky was the past recipient of this award in 2020 for similar reasons, Light No Fire is poised to emerge blazing from the get-go. Featuring different character races, mounts, underwater exploration, housing, gathering, and the charming art direction that No Man’s Sky is famous for, Light No Fire certainly promises an immersive fantasy experience.

One of the most enticing features in Light No Fire is that its Earth-sized fantasy world will be shared across all its players simultaneously, a concept comparable to Valheim with massive multiplayer. The procedural generation tech that No Man’s Sky has will seemingly carry over to Light No Fire, though it remains to be seen which platforms the game will launch on.

Currently, Light No Fire has no release date, and it may be wise to temper expectations. While No Man’s Sky‘s influence is palpable in Light No Fire, details about the game are still unknown – it aims to push the boundaries of sandbox gameplay, and takes inspiration from classical fantasy, but concepts such as combat, classes, and character progression remain under wraps. Hopefully, Sean Murray and his team will avoid the mistakes of No Man’s Sky.
