A new study by Legal & General has revealed Londoners are among the UK’s heaviest mobile phone users, clocking up an average of 3.71 hours a day – above the national average of 3.41 hours.
The research, based on a nationally representative survey of 2,000 UK adults, sheds light on how mobile phone usage is affecting people personally, professionally, and in their relationships. And in the capital, the impact is particularly pronounced.
London: A Connected but concerned capital
While London leads the way in daily screen time, its residents also express the strongest desire to cut back, with over half (56%) saying they want to reduce how much time they spend on their phones, the highest proportion of any UK city.
The study found that 59% of Londoners value phones for keeping in touch with friends and family, and 40% appreciate easy access to news and information. But many also recognise the downside of being constantly connected.
In this, a third (33%) of respondents in London admit they sometimes use their phone during social interactions – and 20% said they do this often. With this phone usage, other areas of individuals’ lives have been impacted. For one, over half (59%) stated excessive phone use has negatively affected their romantic relationships to some extent, and 68% feel pressure to be “always available” via messaging or social media.
Balancing connection and wellbeing
The findings paint a complex picture: while phones help Londoners stay informed and connected, the emotional and practical toll of constant screen time is being felt across the city. As Legal & General’s data shows, many are aware of these drawbacks and actively seeking to set boundaries.
Finding a healthy balance with our phones requires a mindful approach.
Here are some tips for learning to live with our phones while maintaining a connection to the rest of our lives:
- Disable notifications: Those constant ‘pings’ are a clear distraction. Turn off app notifications or use the ‘Do Not Disturb’ feature to regain focus.
- Phone-free zones: Keep your phone out of the bedroom to help improve your sleep quality and ensure a more restful night.
- Monitor your usage: Check your smartphone’s usage data and set goals for how much time you spend on your phone. Maybe even reward yourself for hitting targets!
- Take regular breaks: Schedule time away from your phone to move around and refresh, improving both your productivity and overall wellbeing.
- Review your apps: Identify which apps are taking up most of your attention, whether it’s games or social media, and consider deleting the ones that no longer serve you.
