These DC characters all have saddening backstories.
While the image of these characters is often centered around flashy suits, powers, and victories, it’s not always sunshine and rainbows behind the masks. In fact, this is what makes them relatable, showing that even the mightiest heroes and villains go through bad experiences. Here are the characters with the most tragic backstories in Marvel.
8 Bucky Barnes
The Winter Soldier
Perhaps one of the most misunderstood characters in Marvel is Bucky Barnes, aka. the Winter Soldier. Born in New York, Bucky faced tragedy early in his childhood with the death of his mother. Soon after that, he lost his father while serving in the military. While that is enough to break a person, bad fate won’t end for him here.
While serving in the military himself, Bucky is captured by the Soviet forces after a mission goes awry. While in captivity, he’s subjected to horrific experiments that turn him into the Winter Soldier, a mindless assassin working for Hydra. Converted into the Winter Soldier, Bucky is stripped of his memories and brainwashed, making his story truly devastating.
7 Spider-Man
Orphaned And Burdened With Guilt
Born to Richard and Mary Parker, Peter was orphaned at a young age after both his parents died in a plane crash. Adopted by his aunt and uncle, Peter grew up in a loving household after this severe trauma. However, things took a drastic turn again. After Peter gains his spider-powers, he witnesses a robbery.
However, he doesn’t stop the robber and lets him get away. Later, the same robber kills his Uncle Ben, making the story come full circle. From here, the infamous saying is born that ‘With great power comes great responsibility.’ Losing his dad-like figure, Peter suffers from a heightened sense of loss and is forever haunted by the guilt of his actions, turning him into the unflinchingly virtuous Spider-Man.
6 Loki
Orphaned, Adopted, And Neglected
Loki, the Norse God of mischief, is one of Marvel’s saddest villains. While his evil actions aren’t justifiable, they stem from the fact that Loki was never accepted as a child, making for a tragic backstory. Born to the King of the Frost Giants, Loki was abandoned due to his small stature and adopted by Odin.

However, Odin casts an enchantment on Loki to hide his Frost Giant features. On top of hiding the truth from him, Odin often ignored Loki and favored Thor, his true-born son. This created resentment in Loki’s heart towards Thor, and he resorted to mischief as a means of coping with this emotional neglect. Already in a fragile state, Loki later finds out his true origins as a Frost Giant, shattering his sense of self, and turning him into one of Marvel’s most iconic villains.
5 Black Widow
Tortured By The KGB
Orphaned and abandoned as a child, Black Widow, or Natasha Romanoff, faced early trauma. However, her sad fate wouldn’t stop there. As she grew older, Natasha was recruited by the KGB. Here, she went through rigorous training and psychological brainwashing that would decimate her sense of self. On top of that, she was further trained in the Red Room program, where young girls are transformed into elite spies.
If that wasn’t enough, after the death of her first love Nikolai in WW2, Natasha married Alexei Shostakov. However, the KGB faked the death of her husband in an effort to turn her into a mindless assassin. Losing everything from her parents to her sense of self, Natasha suffers immense trauma, driving her to become the Black Widow.
4 Nebula
Forced To Compete Against Her Sister
Similar to Loki, Nebula was also adopted alongside her sister Gamora. However, instead of raising them in a royal household like Odin, Thanos raised them under a tyrannical rule, transforming them into living weapons. To put her tragic past into perspective, both sisters were orphaned by Thanos as he invaded their planet and wiped out half the population.
After killing their parents, Thanos adopted both Nebula and Gamora. However, the Mad Titan favored Gamora more, neglecting Nebula. On top of that, he would make them compete in brutal fights against each other. Each time Nebula lost, he would alter her body with cybernetic enchantments, turning her into an unwilling cyborg. This relentless cycle of violence and abuse broke Nebula completely, making her a truly tragic character.
3 Daredevil
Loses His Vision And Then His Dad
Matt Murdock, or Daredevil, lives a life defined by tragedy. Being one of Marvel’s darkest characters, Daredevil has suffered immense loss and comes from a sad past. As a child, Matt suffers an accident while saving an elderly man. This accident takes away his vision, making him blind for the rest of his life.

However, being a vigilante comes with a sense of trauma, as he isolates himself and lives a lonely life. While the accident turns Matt into a superhuman, it comes at the price of having a ruined childhood.
2 Wolverine
Experimented On And Turned Into A Weapon
Wolverine, or Logan, is perhaps the most tragic mutant in all of Marvel. Cursed with near immortality, Logan has witnessed the death of almost all of his loved ones, creating a severe sense of isolation. As a child, Logan unknowingly murders his biological father. Later, due to losing control of his powers, he accidentally murders his first love, Rose, as well.
Further adding to his trauma, Logan is admitted to the Weapon X program, where he’s turned into a killing machine. During the program, Wolverine is stripped of his memories, leaving him with a fragmented sense of self. The combined trauma of his childhood and the Weapon X program scars Logan deeply. On top of this trauma, Logan goes through intense loss throughout his life as Wolverine, resulting in one of the saddest stories in Marvel.
1 Rocket Raccoon
A Survivor Of Horrifying Experiments
Rocket Raccoon, a beloved character from Guardians of the Galaxy, has the most tragic backstory in Marvel. Originally a normal Raccoon, Rocket is subjected to horrific and inhumane experiments that alter his biology. The High Revolutionary, the scientist behind these experiments, performs many surgeries on Rocket in an attempt to create the perfect civilization.
As such, Rocket goes through intense trauma, pain, and invasive mechanical procedures. On top of that, while imprisoned, Rocket tries to escape with his friends. However, they’re murdered by the High Revolutionary. This adds to Rocket’s trauma and guilt, breaking him even more. Ultimately, Rocket finally escapes his captivity and finds a home with the Guardians. However, his journey as a tortured subject makes him a character truly defined by tragedy.
