  • Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics will be available both digitally and physically for Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4.
  • Seven classic games will be included in this collection, from X-Men: Children of the Atom to Marvel vs. Capcom 2.

Nostalgic Marvel vs. Capcom fans will be able to purchase a physical copy of the upcoming Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics collection, as confirmed by Capcom itself shortly after it was officially announced during the June 18 Nintendo Direct stream. For the past decade or so, fans have been hoping for a rerelease of the seminal Marvel vs. Capcom games, with internet hashtags and noted gamers like Maximilian Dood and Micheal B. Jordan lending their support. Sadly, these hopes would remain unanswered, with the only recent rerelease being a Marvel vs. Capcom 2 arcade cabinet from Arcade1Up back in 2022.

This finally changed during the Nintendo Direct June 2024 livestream, where it was announced that Marvel and Capcom are teaming up once again to release Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics later this year. Seven classic games will be included in this collection, from the original X-Men: Children of the Atom and Marvel Super Heroes titles that kickstarted the franchise to the legendary Marvel vs Capcom 2. Even the 1993 arcade beat ‘em-up The Punisher, which first sparked Capcom and Marvel’s long-standing relationship, will be featured in the upcoming compilation.

The Marvel Vs. Capcom series is a beloved one by fighting game and comic fans alike, but how do all of its entries stack up?

Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics was confirmed for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Steam, with the console versions now confirmed to have physical editions. Kotaku senior reporter Ethan Gach confirmed this after talking to a representative from Capcom shortly after rumors started to spread that only the PS4 version would get a physical release. A listing on Nintendo’s official website supported this news, as reported by NintendoLife.

The topic of physical media’s continued relevance in the increasingly digital gaming industry remains highly debated, with major concerns being digital ownership and continued support for titles that have been released only on digital platforms like Steam. This last subject might hit especially hard for Marvel vs. Capcom fans, as past releases from before the Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics were all eventually delisted from digital platforms – resulting in the older entries being in a state of limbo for so long.

The good news is that Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics is finally bringing the beloved Marvel vs. Capcom series to modern consoles, with plenty of special features and bonuses to entice fans. Gamers who would prefer a physical release will also be able to pick one up for the new Marvel vs. Capcom collection on Nintendo Switch and PS4 when it launches sometime later this year.
