Coming hot off the heels of the hit Happy Meal and Sanrio collaboration this July, McDonald’s is set to release a Super Mario toy line. However, there’s a catch: It’s only available in Japan. These are the first Super Mario Happy Meal toys in almost two years.
The last time there was a Super Mario collaboration with McDonald’s was during the winter holiday season of 2022 to promote the Super Mario Bros. Movie. The Super Mario Bros Movie toys were available in 23 countries, unlike the new line. The soon-to-be-released Happy Meal collaboration promotes Universal Studio Japan’s most recent expansion and upcoming attractions centered around the Super Mario franchise, making this a unique collectible for theme park enthusiasts and gamers alike.

According to Sora News, there will be a total of six Japan-exclusive Happy Meal toys. Since the collection has been produced with Super Nintendo Land in mind, each toy represents a different attraction in Universal Studios Japan. Donkey Kong is featured in what seems to be a miniature version of the launch barrel in the upcoming roller coaster Mine-Cart Madness, while Chef Toad is a reference to the area’s main dining location, Kinopio’s Cafe. Even the warp pipe entrance to the land has received a toy rendition as part of this collaboration.

The toys are quite varied, and each one has integrated an embossed Super Nintendo World logo into its design. The six Happy Meal toys are:
Each toy has unique functions to highlight different experiences from the themed land. Princess Peach’s castle acts as the entry point for the land in the park, and the toy comes with a button to rotate through different character art. The Yoshi bracelet, similar to the slow-moving dark ride, has a game involving sorting the Yoshi eggs into their respective colored slots. The Mario Kart toy comes with a Mario figurine and a sticker set to deck the Kart out. This is intended to represent the hallmark ride of Super Nintendo World, Mario Kart: Koopa’s Challenge. It even comes with a Green Shell token to launch from the front of the toy.
The Donkey Kong minecart is meant to be launched from the barrel, hinting at what guests will experience when the roller coaster opens sometime in 2024. Chef Toad is actually a kendama toy, with a mushroom-shaped ring to hook onto Toad’s spatula, head, or pan. The Warp Pipe is a replica of the tunnel visitors walk through to access Princess Peach’s castle in the park, with a Luigi decal inviting those who have this toy to take a glimpse into the camera lens to see snippets of the experiences in Super Nintendo World, from character meet-n-greets to concept art of upcoming attractions.
Will These Toys Ever Come Overseas?
Currently, it is unknown if or when these toys will make their debut in other regions. It would be fair to assume that these may come overseas in 2025, when Universal Orlando opens its highly-anticipated third gate, Epic Universe, to promote the Super Nintendo World area of the park. Additionally, extremely popular Japanese McDonald’s toys and collaborations from years ago have recently been brought to the United States in the form of full-fledged merchandise drops.
Super Mario
Super Mario is one of the biggest names in gaming. The first game in the franchise was 1985’s Super Mario Bros., a game that is credited with helping the gaming industry recover from its two-year crash that began in 1983.
The Super Mario series still has an important place in gaming today, largely thanks to Nintendo’s ability to continuously innovate the platform games.
