Now that Minecraft has shifted towards a smaller and seemingly shorter update cycle, with the content drops coming out more often in exchange for a reducer scope, the potential for minor additions is at an all-time high. While these drops won’t add content as large as previous versions like the Nether Update or Caves and Cliffs, the smaller things can still have giant consequences, namely with adding new items.

Minecraft is Getting Its Own Theme Parks
Mojang Studios announces a new partnership with a major theme park company, which will allow fans to experience the game in real life.
With the upcoming Winter Drop adding the Creaking and Pale Garden, items like resin will shortly enter the game. However, items that change seemingly minor things about the player experience, more akin to tools, could add a tremendous amount to the game while only adding a single thing. Between items that change the early game to variants that simplify the late game, five items should be added to Minecraft sooner rather than later.
5 Wrench
Simple Rotation
An item found in various data packs and mods is the wrench. The seemingly simple wrench could be one of the most popular items among builders and redstone-users alike. The wrench, in current non-vanilla iterations, operates as a way to rotate placed blocks, which may seem like a minor and somewhat pointless addition, but given how annoying it can be to line up redstone-related blocks perfectly or to have blocks like glazed terracotta look correct, the value of a wrench shines through.
Extremely useful for a wide subset of players, having a convenient way to change the direction of a block without having to break it and try again is a dream for many technically-minded players. The wrench, assumedly made of iron or copper, would also be tremendously cheap and available for players at any stage.
4 Hookshot
Teased With Potatoes
An item found conceptually from the completely perfect poisonous potato April Fools update, adding a hookshot-like item to Minecraft opens up a new opportunity for movement outside of the fairly strict binary of elytra versus land travel. While the hookshot item in the joke update was based on a poisonous potato sprouting, the potential for an equally organic item is present in Minecraft.

A Minecraft Movie Behind The Scenes Video Reveals More Of The Story
Minecraft fans get a closer look behind the scenes of the upcoming film adaptation of the beloved game.
Thanks to the strangely organic, mossy, but apparently not vegan nature of the Sculk, a hookshot made from veins of this strange substance could easily enter the game. For players that have not killed the Ender Dragon or do not have a computer that can handle Elytra travel, or any other number of reasons that make Elytra non-viable and travel by horse and the like not enough, the addition of a hookshot could grant an incredible amount of mobility for any player.
3 Ender Bundle
Inventory Magic
With bundles finally existing in the game, the potential for a variant that allows players to use an ender chest via an ender bundle could be the perfect evolution of the bundle item, despite how recently they were properly introduced. Mostly aimed at later-game or even post-game players, the ender bundle would simply be a more convenient way to put things in or take things out of an ender chest.
Since the current way ender chests are used feels slightly obtuse, with a stationary one and at least one that is meant to repeatedly be placed, used, and broken when the player needs to access the smaller inventory, the addition of the ender bundle would cut the fat of this entire interaction. There’s even the possibility that the ender bundle can only allow things to be removed but not placed, or any other combination for balancing.
2 Magic Lead
Mob-Control Convenience
Another item found through various mods, a magical version of the lead item that offers instant peaceful or neutral mob capture is the dream of most players who need to move mobs conveniently. Instead of having to maneuver a horse across oceans, ravines, villages, and more, the player would have to collect it inside the infinite lead, treating the mob like an item instead.

Minecraft Player Accidentally Makes All Their Sheep Turn Shiny
A Minecraft player tinkers with the settings on their PC, and accidentally gives the game’s sheep a new and unexpected appearance.
With an item this powerful, the magic lead would have to be an expensive item to craft in the first place, and given its dimensional properties, having End-only items within the recipe would make perfect sense. Although the lead would be extraordinarily convenient, it may require notable downsides such as a one-time use to make up for such power.
1 Rope
Early-Game Power
What might be the most useful item addition for early-game players and an endlessly useful building block for players at any point, having a rope to rappel down into deep caves or making it easier to climb back up a small base truly fits the spirit of Minecraft.
With a recipe that could be made out of fairly cheap string and wheat as a stand-in for similar fiber, rope could add the convenience many players wish for from ladders without having to descend to the depth desired first, and without needing a block at the back for support, only at the top or even side for the first length of rope. Perfect for builds of any kind including bridges, excavation sites, and small towers that can’t properly fit a staircase, a rope item is one of the more obvious missing pieces from Minecraft.
