- Leaks suggest Square Enix plans to remake Dragon Quest 1, 2, and 3 in HD-2D trilogy.
- Fans speculate that the trilogy may be separate games or released in one collection.
A notable leaker has shared more evidence regarding Square Enix’s plans for a Dragon Quest HD-2D remake trilogy. While fans may be more familiar with Square Enix’s Final Fantasy franchise, the long-running Dragon Quest series predates the former and is still quite a celebrated series across the world. After its first release in 1986, the series has had 11 mainline games, plus remakes and spin-offs. One of the most anticipated games by Square Enix is another Dragon Quest remake, specifically the Dragon Quest 3 HD-2DRemake.
Dragon Quest 3 HD-2DRemake was first announced in 2021, with a trailer that showed the classic RPG in the same art style as Octopath Traveler. While the game went radio silent for three years, a new update from Square Enix announced the platforms the Dragon Quest 3 remake would be launching on, which was an encouraging sign for fans. However, recent leaks have suggested that Square Enix is preparing for a remake of not only the third game in this style, but a whole trilogy, possibly in one package.

Not all Dragon Quest games offer an easy experience; here are the hardest and most challenging entries in the series.
Prominent Nintendo, Sega, and Atlus leaker, Midori, posted on Twitter about Square Enix registering a new web domain specifically for Dragon Quest HD-2D, which was registered on April 24. The URL she posted currently leads to a blank website, but is a valid registration. When suggested that the reason why fans heard little news about the Dragon Quest 3 remake was because of it being a trilogy in the HD-2D art style, Midori says that is correct.
New Domain Suggests Dragon Quest HD-2D Trilogy Remake
This lines up with one of Midori’s previous leaks, where she states that the reason why the remake was delayed was because Square Enix was working on a Dragon Quest HD-2D trilogy. This also aligns with the recent teaser Square Enix posted near the end of May, where it showed a sketch of Erdrick’s symbol, and that the game logos shown were of the franchise in general, and not specifically the third game.
Some fans began speculating the scope and function of Square Enix’s potential Dragon Quest HD-2D trilogy, suggesting it might be a game compiling them together as separate games to play through, or even the idea that the Dragon Quest 3 remake expanded to include the first and second games as one playable adventure. The first three Dragon Quest games are all connected in terms of timeline and setting, with the third game in particular being a prequel to the prior two. That said, this is all speculation for the time being, and despite Midori’s incredibly accurate track record, fans should wait till more official information is presented.
